How Many Packs or Bundles of Hair Do I Need?
Quick answer
How many packs of hair extensions you need depends on the method. One clip-in or halo set covers a full head. Superior Hair recommends 4 to 6 packs of tape-ins, U-tips or flat tips for a full head, 2 to 3 packs of genius or machine weft, and 2 bundles of afro-textured tape-ins.
Working out how many packs of hair extensions to order is confusing because "pack" and "bundle" mean different things from one method to the next. A clip-in set is a whole head of hair in one box, a tape-in pack is 10 small wefts, and a strand pack is 25 individual pieces. This guide decodes each one using Superior Hair's own pack sizes and full-head recommendations, so you can order the right amount the first time.

Packs vs bundles: what you are actually counting

In the extensions world, "bundle" usually means one length of wefted hair, the long strip of hair stitched or bonded along a seam that a stylist sews or beads in. "Pack" is the more general word for whatever comes in one box. The trouble is that neither word tells you how much hair you are getting. Here is what one unit holds at Superior Hair:
- Clip-in or halo set: a complete head of hair, from 105g to 240g depending on the line and length.
- Tape-in pack: 10 wefts (5 "sandwiches", one weft above and one below a thin section of your hair).
- Strand pack (U-tip, flat tip, nano tip): 25 individual strands.
- Genius weft pack: one bundle, a single 80cm-wide weft.
- Afro-textured tape-in bundle: 40 pieces and 100g of hair.
So "four packs" can mean a lot of hair or very little. Always check what is inside one unit before you count. Everything Superior Hair sells is 100% Remy human hair, with the cuticle intact and running root to tip, so packs of the same line and length blend into each other cleanly.

Nano tips come in the same 25-strand pack as U-tips and flat tips, and butterfly wefts come as a single 36cm weft. Superior Hair does not publish a fixed full-head count for those two, so your stylist sets it at consultation.
What changes your count: density, length and goal
The ranges above have a low end and a high end for a reason. Three things move you along them.
Density. This is how many strands grow from your scalp, not how thick each strand is. Dense hair needs the top of the range, otherwise the extensions show as a thin layer under your own hair. Our guide to extensions for thick and coarse hair explains how to add enough without bulk. Fine hair sits at the bottom of the range, and adding too much puts strain on the roots. The best extension methods for fine and thin hair covers the lightest options.
Length. The longer the extensions, the more hair it takes to keep the ends looking full. A seamless tape-in pack climbs from 22g at 14 inches to 35g at 26 inches for that reason. A big jump from short natural hair to very long extensions also takes more hair to blend the line where your own hair ends.
Goal. Volume only, like filling out the sides or a thin crown, often takes 1 to 2 packs. Length plus volume is a full head.
Clip-ins, halos and fill-ins: usually one set
With ready-to-wear hair, the question is which set, not how many.
- Classic clip-in extensions: 9 pieces, 105g at 16 inches up to 145g at 26 inches, for regular to medium hair.
- Seamless clip-ins: 10 pieces, 160g at 16 inches up to 240g at 24 inches, for medium to thick hair. If a classic set looks thin on you, step up to seamless rather than buying two classic sets.
- Classic halo: one set of 140g at 16 inches or 180g at 20 inches, made of a main halo piece plus two small clip-in wefts. Halos blend best on natural hair that is at least shoulder length.
- Scalp fill-ins: 4 small two-clip wefts (30g) per pack for cosmetic coverage at the part or crown. One pack is often enough on its own, or you can pair it with a clip-in set.
Blending two shades?
Mixing colors splits your pack count across shades, so confirm both shades before you order.

These methods are installed by a trained stylist, never at home, and your stylist confirms the final count. Knowing the range helps you budget and order.
Tape-ins
Each pack of seamless tape-in extensions holds 10 wefts, each 4cm wide. Superior Hair recommends 1 to 2 packs for volume and 4 to 6 packs for a standard full head, which is 40 to 60 wefts. Invisi tape skin wefts follow the same 4 to 6 pack guide. The same hair can be reused across applications (up to four for seamless tape-ins), so you are not rebuying the full count at every move-up.
U-tips, flat tips and nano tips
Strand packs hold 25 pieces. For U-tips and flat tips, Superior Hair recommends 1 to 2 packs for volume and 4 to 6 for an average full head, so roughly 100 to 150 strands. Nano tips come in the same 25-strand pack. Keratin U-tips generally are not reused, so each full reinstall needs a fresh pack count, while flat tips and nano tips can be reused for up to three applications.
Wefts
Weft packs are the most generous. One pack of genius weft extensions is a single 80cm bundle that can be cut anywhere along the seam without unraveling, so your stylist can split it into rows sized to your head. Superior Hair recommends 2 to 3 packs for a standard full head of genius weft, and 2 to 3 packs of machine weft. Butterfly wefts are shorter at 36cm, so the count depends on how many rows your stylist plans.
Bundles for curly, coily and kinky hair
Superior Hair's afro-textured range is 100% virgin Remy hair in textures from 2C to 4C, and it is sold by the bundle. The counts differ from the straight ranges.
- Afro-textured tape-ins: one bundle is 40 pieces, each 1.5 inches wide and 2.5g, for 100g per bundle. Superior Hair recommends 2 bundles for a full installation, and most customers buy 2.
- Afro-textured clip-ins, standard set: 6 pieces and 117g. You need 2 bundles for a full head, and lengths past 18 inches may need 3, depending on how full you want it.
- Afro-textured clip-ins, deluxe set: 10 pieces with more hair per set, so one bundle is enough for a full head.
- Wefted bundles: sold by length for sew-in or pinned installs. Superior Hair does not list a fixed bundle count, so your stylist works it out from your density and style.
Allow for shrinkage
Afro-textured lengths are measured with the hair pulled straight. Once it springs back into its curl pattern it looks much shorter: on Superior Hair's chart, 16 inches straight is about 7 inches curly, and 20 inches straight is about 11 inches curly. Choose your length by the curly measurement, and remember that longer lengths are where the extra bundle comes in.
Buying smart: shades, spares and reuse
Match before you open. Clip-ins, halos and ponytails include a tester piece so you can check the color without breaking the seal. Superior Hair accepts returns within 30 days, but you need to request the return first, and opened packaging returned without prior approval carries a 10% restocking fee.
Buy each shade in enough quantity. If you are blending two colors, you need enough packs in each to place them naturally through your hair, not one extra pack of the second shade.
Do not over-buy for fine hair. The top of a range is for dense hair. More hair on fine hair means more weight on fewer roots.
Plan around reuse. Reusable methods (tape-ins, flat tips, nano tips and wefts) let one well cared for full head carry you through several installs. Non-reusable U-tips mean buying your full count again at each reinstall.

How many packs of hair extensions do I need for a full head?
It depends on the method. One clip-in or halo set covers a full head. Superior Hair recommends 4 to 6 packs of tape-ins, U-tips or flat tips, 2 to 3 packs of genius or machine weft, and 2 bundles of afro-textured tape-ins. Dense hair and longer lengths sit at the top of each range.
How many bundles of hair do I need?
For Superior Hair's genius weft, 2 to 3 bundles make a standard full head, since each pack is one 80cm weft. For afro-textured tape-ins, 2 bundles of 40 pieces is the full-install recommendation. Afro-textured standard clip-ins take 2 bundles, or 3 past 18 inches, while one deluxe bundle covers a full head.
How many tape-in packs do I need?
Superior Hair recommends 1 to 2 packs of seamless tape-ins for volume and 4 to 6 packs for a standard full head. Each pack holds 10 wefts, so a full head is 40 to 60 wefts. Fine hair usually needs the lower end, and thick hair or longer lengths need the higher end. Your stylist confirms the final number.
Is one set of clip-ins enough?
Yes, for most people. Superior Hair's classic clip-in set is 9 pieces for regular to medium hair, and the seamless set is 10 pieces with more hair for medium to thick hair. If a classic set looks thin against your own hair, switch to the seamless set rather than buying a second classic set.
Do curly extensions need more bundles?
Sometimes. Curly, coily and kinky hair shrinks into its pattern, so a length that measures 20 inches straight looks about 11 inches curly. Superior Hair's standard afro-textured clip-ins take 2 bundles for a full head, and lengths past 18 inches may need 3, depending on how full you want the result.
