How to Apply Clip-In Extensions: A Placement Map

Quick answer

To apply clip-in extensions, brush out tangles, then work from the bottom of your head up. Clip the widest weft across the back below the occipital bone, add rows about an inch apart toward the crown, and finish with the smallest wefts above each ear. Always leave a layer of natural hair loose on top to cover every clip.

Knowing how to apply clip in extensions is mostly about placement. A weft clipped too close to your part shows the moment the wind picks up, and one clipped too low tugs at the nape. This zone-by-zone map puts every piece of your set where it adds length and fullness without giving itself away.

New to clip-ins?

Clip-ins are the easiest way into extensions: no salon visit, no long-term commitment, and they come out at night. See classic, seamless, halo, and ponytail styles side by side before you pick a set.

Before you start: prep and lay out your set

Clip-ins need enough natural hair to hide under. Superior Hair recommends at least 6 to 7 inches of your own hair, roughly shoulder length, so each weft has a layer falling over it. If you are still deciding which set to buy, our beginner's buyer guide to classic clip-in extensions covers lengths and weights in detail.

Work on dry, tangle-free hair. Second-day hair is ideal, because freshly washed, silky hair gives the clip combs less to grip. You will need:

  • A tail comb for clean, straight partings
  • Sectioning clips and a handheld mirror
  • A loop or detangling brush from the hair extension tools range
  • Light-hold hairspray, optional but useful for fine or slippery hair

Next, unpack and lay every weft on a flat surface, widest to narrowest, and open all the clips. A classic set such as the #4 Chocolate Brown classic clip-ins comes as 9 pieces of 100% Remy human hair, from 105g at 16 inches up to 145g at 26 inches, and suits regular to medium hair. Seamless clip-ins come as 10 pieces on thin silicone wefts, from 160g to 240g, and suit medium to thick hair. Every set also includes a tester piece, so you can confirm the color in daylight before you break the seal.

The clip-in placement map, zone by zone

Use your head's own landmarks as a guide. Run your fingers up the back of your head from the nape and you will feel a bump: that is the occipital bone, the widest part of the back of your skull. The tops of your ears, your crown, and your part line are the other reference points, which is why the map works on any head size.

Zone 1: the base row

Your first and widest weft goes across the back, about an inch above the nape hairline and just under the occipital bone. This row builds the foundation of your length. Too low, at the hairline itself, and it pulls on fine baby hairs and shows whenever you lift your hair.

Zone 2: the middle row

About an inch higher, roughly level with the tops of your ears, place the next widest weft. This is where most of your fullness comes from, because the head is broad here and the weft can sit fully across it.

Zone 3: the crown row

Another inch up, add a mid-width weft across the crown. Stop at least an inch below your part. This row carries length up into your top layers so you do not get a visible shelf where your own hair ends and the extensions begin.

Zone 4: the sides

The smallest wefts go above and slightly behind each ear, angled to follow the curve of your head. They add fullness around your face and make your new length visible from the front. Keep them about an inch back from the hairline so they stay hidden when you tuck hair behind your ears. Any leftover narrow wefts can fill gaps beside the middle row, but skip them if the back already feels full.

Zone Where it sits Weft size What it does
1. Base row About 1 inch above the nape, below the occipital bone Widest Foundation of length
2. Middle row Level with the tops of the ears Next widest Most of the fullness
3. Crown row At least 1 inch below the part Mid-width Blends length into top layers
4. Sides Above each ear, 1 inch back from the hairline Smallest Face-framing fullness
5. Fill-ins Gaps beside rows 2 or 4 Leftover narrow wefts Optional extra volume

How to apply clip in extensions, step by step

With the map in mind, the application itself is a simple loop: section, clip, release, repeat. Your first attempt may take a while. With practice, most people get a full set in within a few minutes.

  1. Brush everything. Detangle your natural hair and each weft. Knots at the root stop clips from lying flat.
  2. Part the base row. Use the tail of your comb to draw a clean horizontal line about an inch above your nape. Twist the hair above it up and clip it out of the way.
  3. Prep the root if you need grip. For fine or slippery hair, lightly backcomb a narrow band along the parting and mist it with hairspray. This gives the clip combs something to hold.
  4. Place the weft. Hold the weft with the clips facing your head and the comb teeth pointing down. Snap in the center clip first, sliding the teeth into the hair just below the parting and close to the root, then fasten the outer clips. The clips grip hair, not scalp.
  5. Release and repeat. Let down about an inch of hair, part a new line, and clip in the next weft. Continue through the middle and crown rows, stopping well below your part.
  6. Do the sides. Part a short horizontal section above each ear and clip in the smallest wefts, angled with the curve of your head.
  7. Blend. Let all your hair down and brush gently from the ends upward. If your own hair is layered or shorter than the extensions, curl or wave everything together so the lengths melt into each other.

Not sure of your shade?

Placement hides the weft, but color hides the hair. If the shade is off, even a perfect map will show. Send us a photo for a free shade match before you order.

Adjusting the map for fine, thick, or short hair

The five zones stay the same for everyone. What changes is how many wefts you use, how far apart the rows sit, and which set you start with.

Fine or thin hair

Space your rows about an inch and a half apart so each weft has enough of your own hair over it, and backcomb lightly at every parting. Fine hair often looks better with 5 to 7 wefts than the full set, and the classic set suits it better than the heavier seamless set.

Thick hair

Seamless clip-in extensions carry more hair per weft on a flat silicone strip, so you get density without extra bulk at the root. Rows can sit closer together. Our comparison of seamless vs classic clip-ins explains which weft suits your density.

Shorter hair

Around shoulder length, keep the rows low, where your hair is longest, and use fewer pieces. A 16-inch length blends more believably than 26 inches, and a wave through the ends hides the step.

Hair type Best starting set Row spacing Key tweak
Fine or thin Classic, 9 pieces About 1.5 inches Fewer wefts, backcomb at each parting
Medium Classic or seamless About 1 inch Follow the map as written
Thick Seamless, 10 pieces Under 1 inch Use every piece, add a second middle row
Shoulder length Classic, 16 inches About 1 inch, kept low Skip the crown row, wave the ends

How to hide wefts and clips

Leave at least an inch of natural hair loose above every weft. Clip into a full section of hair close to the root, because a weft hanging from a thin wisp swings away from the head and shows its edge.

Check your part. If you flip it to the other side, the crown weft may suddenly sit right under it, so move that weft down or across. Then do a movement test: shake your head, tilt forward, and check the back in two mirrors.

Color does the rest. If your hair has a darker root or highlights, a balayage or highlighted shade blends more naturally than a flat single color. The classic clip-in color guide shows every shade

Common placement mistakes

  • Clipping too close to the part. The top row is the one people see first. Keep it an inch or more below.
  • Starting at the hairline. A base row right on the nape strains baby hairs and shows in ponytails.
  • Clipping into too little hair. Thin sections let clips slide and concentrate weight on a few strands, which is where tension and breakage start.
  • Straight rows on a curved head. Let each weft follow the shape of your head in a gentle curve rather than a ruler-straight line.
  • Ignoring discomfort. A clip that pinches or aches is gripping too tightly or too close to the scalp. Reopen it and reposition.

Removing and storing your set

Take clip-ins out in the reverse order you put them in, top row first. Press each clip open fully and slide it out; never pull a closed clip through your hair. Brush each weft and store the set flat in its box.

Do not sleep or swim in clip-ins, and wash them only every 10 to 15 wears with alcohol-free and sulfate-free products. Use heat protection when you style them and keep hot tools off the weft itself. Never bleach or dye them. The full hair extension care guide covers washing and drying. Looked after this way, a Superior Hair clip-in set can last up to a year.

Clip-in extension FAQ

What order do you put clip-in extensions in?

Start at the bottom and work up. The widest weft goes across the back, about an inch above the nape hairline. Add the next rows roughly an inch apart until you are an inch or so below your part, then finish with the smallest wefts above each ear. Working bottom up lets each new section of natural hair fall over and cover the row beneath it.

How many clip-in wefts should I use?

Use as many as your hair can cover. A Superior Hair classic set has 9 pieces and suits regular to medium hair, while the seamless set has 10 pieces and suits medium to thick hair. Fine or thin hair often looks best with 5 to 7 wefts, because forcing in every piece leaves too little natural hair to hide the clips.

Where should clip-in extensions go if I have thin hair?

Keep to the back and sides, and space the rows about an inch and a half apart so each weft has enough natural hair over it. Lightly backcomb the root along each parting and add a mist of hairspray so the clips grip. Skip the crown row or use one narrow weft there, and stay well clear of your part.

How do I stop my clip-in extensions from showing?

Leave at least an inch of natural hair loose above every weft, keep the top row well below your part, and set the side wefts an inch back from your hairline. Clip into a full section of hair close to the root so the weft lies flat. A close color match matters too, so check the shade in daylight before you open the set.

Can you wear clip-in extensions with short hair?

Yes, if your hair is long enough to cover the wefts. Superior Hair recommends natural hair of at least 6 to 7 inches, roughly shoulder length. With shorter cuts, keep the rows lower on the head, use fewer wefts, choose a shorter length such as 16 inches, and wave everything together so the extensions blend into your ends.

Can I sleep in clip-in extensions?

No. Take clip-ins out before bed and before swimming. Sleeping in them strains the hair where the clips grip and tangles the wefts. Remove them top to bottom, brush each piece, and store them flat. Cared for this way and washed every 10 to 15 wears, a Superior Hair clip-in set can last up to a year.

Where Does Our Human Hair Come From?

Where Does Our Human Hair Come From?

To achieve the most realistic look possible, human hair is the key, with the extensions seamlessly blending in with your natural hair. Many are reluctant when it comes to human hair, often feeling uncomfortable about not knowing where it’s come from. When you shop hair extensions with us, you can be confident in the quality and ethical sourcing of your hair. Below, we discuss where our human hair comes from and how it’s sourced.  Why is Human Hair Preferred Over Synthetic?  Human hair is the most popular choice when it comes to extensions and wigs, due to the realistic results they deliver. These results are more than the look and feel of the extensions, as you have far more freedom when it comes to styling. Heat tools can be used with care to style your long and luscious locks, without damaging the extensions. Where Do Real Human Hair Extensions Come From?  We work hard to maintain a healthy relationship with our hair suppliers and ensure they are paid fairly, and all hair is obtained ethically. Hair extensions have become more popular globally, but where do real human hair extensions come from, and how does the industry keep up with the demand? By putting our relationship with suppliers at the forefront of our business, we can ensure that they’re receiving enough money to provide them with a source of income and living wages. All our hair is sourced ethically, and we are devoted to adhering to the strict industry guidelines for hair production to keep things fair and ethical on every level of our supply chain. We do not condone the use of underage workers, underpaid workers, or unethically sourced hair that has become prevalent in the industry. The Importance of Ethical Sourcing The world is paying more attention to where their hair comes from as some of the darker aspects of the hair trade come to light. The Guardian explains that hair is generally sourced from impoverished areas, where women are offered small payments for their hair. It’s emphasised that this is not something these women are excited to participate in, usually being a last-resort option to ease their financial strain. Many women in these areas have virgin hair—never dyed, touched by heat tools, and in some cases cut at all—making it a valuable commodity on the dark side of the hair trade. There are reports of children being manipulated into shaving their heads, and even “prison hair” is rumoured to be on the market. Fortunately, as more light is shed on the issue, more effort is being put into change. We pride ourselves on our relationship with our suppliers, who all source their hair from willing donors across the world. With global standards adapting and the unethical sourcing of hair put under the microscope, we get closer to seeing a change for the better across the industry. Get Your Dream Locks with Superior Hair Extensions  What better way to feel confident in your locks than knowing they came from a willing donor? There’s no need to wonder about the circumstances that your product has come from. We are proud to have strong relationships with our international suppliers, to ensure fair treatment of workers, donors, and anybody else involved through the process. Whether you want some extra length, volume, or a bit of both, you can find the perfect hair extensions at Superior Hair.

Choosing the right hair extensions for you with Superior Hair

Choosing the right hair extensions for you with Superior Hair

Tired of waiting for your hair to grow out or wanting a quick hairstyle change? Hair-extensions is your answer! They add versatility, length and volume to your natural hair, allowing you to achieve your dream hair in no time! However, with so many different styles of extensions in the market, it can be overwhelming understanding which is the right fit for you. But don’t worry! This is why, we’ve made the perfect guide that will walk you through the most important factors to consider when selecting your hair extensions. 1. Lifestyle and Commitment Before choosing a hair extension method, consider your lifestyle and level of commitment. Some methods require more maintenance and regular salon visits, while others are more low-maintenance and can be easily managed at home. For example, Clip-in extensions are perfect for those who want a temporary hair transformation for special occasions or events. They can be easily clipped in and removed at home without any damage to your natural hair. On the other hand, tape-in or bonded extensions are more semi-permanent methods that require professional installation and maintenance. They may need adjustments every few weeks to keep them looking their best. 2. Hair Type and Condition   Your natural hair type and condition also play a crucial role in determining the right extension method for you. Different methods work better with certain hair types, so it's essential to consider your hair's texture, thickness, and length. For fine or thin hair, clip-in extensions are generally a good option as they provide instant volume without causing strain on your natural hair. Tape-in extensions can also work well for fine hair as they lie flat against the scalp and blend seamlessly. However, bonded extensions may not be suitable for fine or thin hair as they can cause stress on the hair follicles. For thick or coarse hair, bonded extensions or sew-in extensions may be better options as they provide a stronger hold and can handle the weight of the extensions more effectively. These methods also allow for more versatility in styling, especially for curly or textured hair. 3. Desired Hairstyle and Look Consider the hairstyle and look you want to achieve with your hair extensions. Different methods offer varying degrees of versatility and styling options. Clip-in extensions are ideal for those who want to experiment with different hairstyles and looks without a long-term commitment. They can be easily removed and styled at home to achieve various hairstyles, from updos to curls to braids.  Tape-in or bonded extensions offer more natural-looking results and allow for more freedom in styling, including heat-styling and updos.  Sew-in or weft extensions are great for those who want to add length and volume while also having the flexibility to style their hair in different ways. 4. Budget and Investment Consider your budget and the investment you are willing to make in hair extensions. Different methods come with varying price points, and it's essential to factor in the cost of installation, maintenance, and upkeep. Clip-in extensions are generally the most affordable option as they can be easily purchased and installed at home. Tape-in or bonded extensions may require a higher upfront cost for professional installation, but they can last longer with proper maintenance. Sew-in or weft extensions may also require professional installation, and the cost can vary depending on the quality of the hair and the stylist's expertise. Remember that investing in high-quality hair extensions is crucial for achieving natural-looking results that last. Cheaper options may not last as long or may not blend well with your natural hair, so it's important to consider the long-term value when making your decision. 5. Maintenance and Care Different hair extension methods require varying levels of maintenance and care. Consider your lifestyle and schedule to determine which method fits your lifestyle and routine. Clip-in extensions are generally low-maintenance and can be easily removed, cleaned, and stored. Tape-in or bonded extensions may require regular salon visits for adjustments and maintenance.   Choosing the right extensions can make all the difference in how you feel about your hair. Whether you're looking for length, volume, or both, there are a variety of extensions to suit your needs. This is why it's important ot consider the factors stated above when making your decision.
