Nano Tip Hair Extensions: A Complete Guide to the Bead Method

Quick answer

Nano tip hair extensions are single 1g strands of human hair finished with a small clear tip, threaded through a silicone-lined nano bead and clamped to a section of your own hair. No glue, no heat, no tape. The bead is about 90% smaller than a traditional micro bead, and a stylist installs and moves up every 6 to 10 weeks.

Nano tips have quietly become the method of choice for people with fine hair who have been told for years that extensions are not for them. The attachment is tiny, there is nothing melted or glued into your hair, and each strand sits where the stylist decides to put it. That flexibility is also why nano tips are harder to get right than a set of clip-ins. This guide covers what they are, how they are applied, how they compare to tape-ins and U-tips, and what owning a set actually asks of you.

What nano tip hair extensions actually are

A nano tip is a single strand of hair, roughly 1 gram, with a small clear flexible tip molded onto the top. That tip is what passes through the bead. The bead itself is a silicone-lined ring measuring 3.0 x 1.5 x 2.0 mm, which is where the name comes from: it is around 90% smaller than the ring used in a traditional micro bead or I-tip system.

Size is the whole point. A smaller ring means a smaller section of your own hair carries each strand, which spreads the load across more attachment points instead of hanging weight off a few thick ones. It also means less to feel when you run your fingers over your scalp and less to hide when you wear your hair up.

The hair matters as much as the attachment. Superior Hair's nano tip range is 100% Remy human hair with the cuticle intact and running in one direction, which is what keeps a set from turning into a matted mess at the nape after six weeks. If you want the detail on why cuticle direction changes how long a set lasts, we broke it down in our piece on cuticle-intact double drawn Remy hair.

New to semi-permanent hair?

Nano tips are one of several professional methods, and the right one depends on your hair density, your budget and how often you can get to a salon. Seeing them side by side helps.

Browse the professional semi-permanent range →

How nano tips are applied

This is a salon method. Nano tips are not a DIY install, and no reputable brand will tell you otherwise. The margin for error is small, and a badly placed bead is the difference between a set that feels like nothing and a set that pulls for three months.

What happens in the chair: your stylist sections the hair in horizontal rows starting low at the nape, pulls a small section of your own hair through the bead with a threading loop, feeds the nano tip into the same bead, slides it up to sit a few millimeters off the scalp, and clamps it flat with pliers. One strand, a few seconds. A full head is simply that repeated across every row, which is why appointments run long.

Two details separate a good install from a bad one. The first is section size: too much of your own hair through the ring and the strand looks bulky, too little and the attachment point carries more tension than it should. The second is the gap at the root. Beads clamped tight against the scalp cause soreness and make the first wash miserable. A small gap lets the hair move.

The silicone-lined nano beads used for the install come in seven shades, from jet black through to golden blonde, so the ring can be matched to your root rather than to the extension hair. If you are looking for someone to fit a set, the salon finder lists stylists already working with Superior Hair.

Nano tips vs micro beads, tape-ins and U-tips

Every semi-permanent method trades something away. Here is the honest version.

Method Attachment Best for Trade-off
Nano tip Silicone-lined bead, no heat or adhesive Fine hair, fine placement, hair that reacts to adhesive Long appointments, strand by strand
Micro bead / I-tip Larger bead, same principle Medium to thick hair More visible and more to feel at the root
Tape-in Adhesive weft sandwiched around your hair Fast application, lies very flat Oil and some products break the bond down
Hot fusion U-tip Keratin bond melted onto the hair Very secure, long wear Heat at the root, removal needs solvent

The practical split is this. If you want speed and a flat profile, seamless tape-ins are hard to beat. If your hair is fine, your scalp is sensitive, or you would rather nothing was stuck or melted to your hair at all, nano tips are the better answer. Strand methods also let a stylist place hair around a fringe, a part or a thinner patch in a way a weft physically cannot.

Who nano tips suit, and who they do not

Nano tips work well if your hair is fine to medium, you wear it up often, you want length and density without a visible band across the back of your head, or adhesives have failed on you before. They are also forgiving for anyone with a short or growing-out fringe, because single strands can be blended into layers rather than sitting in a row.

They are a poor fit in a few situations. Very fragile or actively shedding hair should not carry any semi-permanent method until a professional has looked at it, and that means a stylist or a doctor, not a checkout. Extremely short hair does not give the bead enough length to sit invisibly. And if you cannot commit to a maintenance appointment every couple of months, a temporary method will serve you better than a set you cannot maintain.

Not sure of your shade?

Shade is the single most common reason a set reads as "extensions" instead of hair. Send us photos in natural light and our team will match you before you order.

How much hair you need: strands, grams and length

Superior Hair nano tips are sold in packs of 25 strands, 25 grams per pack, at 1 gram per strand. Both 18 inch and 22 inch are stocked. Because the math is per strand, you buy in increments rather than as a fixed "set", which is useful when your stylist wants 60 strands rather than a round number.

Quantity depends on what you are asking the hair to do. Adding thickness through the mid-lengths of hair that already has decent density needs far fewer strands than adding six inches of length to fine hair, where you need enough weight at the ends to stop the extensions looking stringy. Your stylist decides the count at consultation after looking at your density, your natural length and the finished shape you want. Booking a consultation before ordering hair is almost always cheaper than ordering twice.

One rule holds regardless of count: the bigger the jump in length, the more hair you need to make it look natural. Going from a bob to 22 inches on two packs will look exactly like what it is.

Color matching, root shadow and bead shade

There are 32 shades in the nano tip range, covering solid blacks and browns through to platinum, plus balayage and highlight blends for anyone with dimensional color. The nano tip shade guide shows each one, though screens lie and a match against your mid-lengths in daylight is always better than a match against a photo.

Match to your mid-lengths and ends, not your root. Almost everyone is darker at the root, and extensions that match your root will read as a stripe once they hang past your shoulders. If you wear a deliberate root shadow or a grown-out balayage, a blended shade does the work that a solid one cannot.

The beads get their own match. Ring color should follow your root, because that is where it sits. A blonde bead in dark roots is far more obvious than a slightly imperfect hair match further down the shaft.

Move-ups, longevity and aftercare

Hair grows roughly half an inch a month, so the beads travel down with it. Most people need a move-up every 6 to 10 weeks, where the stylist opens each bead, slides it back up to the root and re-clamps it. Leave it much longer and the attachment points start to twist around each other, which is the main cause of matting at the nape.

The hair itself outlives the install. A well-cared-for set of Remy nano tips is typically reapplied several times before the ends are worn enough to replace, and we covered the realistic numbers in our guide to how long extensions actually last. What shortens that life is heat and friction, not time.

Day to day: brush with a loop or soft bristle brush from the ends upward, holding above the beads so you are not dragging on the attachment. Wash with sulfate-free product, keep conditioner and oil on the mid-lengths and ends rather than the root area, and never go to bed with wet hair. Keep hot tools below 350°F and use heat protection. Extension hair has no blood supply and cannot repair itself, so every bit of heat damage is permanent.

Nano tip extensions FAQ

Do nano tip hair extensions damage your hair?

Nano tips use no heat, glue or tape, and the silicone lining inside the bead cushions the hair at the clamp. Damage comes from how they are handled rather than from the method: sections that are too small, beads clamped too tight or too close to the scalp, skipped move-ups, or brushing that drags on the attachment. Fitted and maintained properly by a stylist, they are one of the gentler semi-permanent options.

How long do nano tip extensions last?

The install needs a move-up every 6 to 10 weeks as your hair grows and the beads travel down. The hair itself lasts considerably longer and is usually reapplied across several move-ups before it needs replacing. Lifespan depends on the grade of hair, how much heat you use and whether you wash with sulfate-free product. Remy hair with the cuticle intact outlasts processed hair by a wide margin.

Can I install nano tip extensions myself?

No. Nano tips are a professional method. The install requires a threading tool, correct section sizing, consistent tension and correct placement away from the hairline and the scalp, all across the back of your own head. Getting it wrong risks traction on your natural hair. Book a stylist trained in strand methods, or use the salon finder to locate one working with Superior Hair.

What is the difference between nano tips and micro beads?

Same principle, different scale. Nano rings measure 3.0 x 1.5 x 2.0 mm and are roughly 90% smaller than traditional micro bead rings, so each attachment takes a smaller section of your own hair and is far less detectable. That makes nano tips the better choice for fine hair or anyone who wears their hair up, while micro beads remain workable on thicker hair.

How many nano tip strands do I need?

It depends on your density, your current length and your goal. Superior Hair nano tips come 25 strands per pack at 1 gram per strand, so you order in increments rather than as a fixed set. Adding volume to hair that already has density needs far fewer strands than adding significant length to fine hair. Have your stylist confirm the count at consultation before you order.

Can you sleep and exercise in nano tip extensions?

Yes, with a little care. Sleep with hair dry and loosely braided or in a low ponytail to stop the strands twisting around each other overnight. After a workout, let the hair dry properly rather than tying it up wet, and rinse out salt or chlorine the same day. Friction and moisture sitting at the root are what cause tangling, not movement itself.

The History of Hair Extensions: From Cleopatra to Today

The History of Hair Extensions: From Cleopatra to Today

Hair extensions have a rich and fascinating history that spans cultures, continents, and centuries. From royalty to modern-day celebrities, the desire for longer, fuller hair has always been a symbol of beauty and status. Let’s take a fun journey through time to see how hair extensions evolved, from ancient Egypt to the red carpets of Hollywood. Ancient Egypt: The Origin of Hair Extensions Hair extensions can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt, where both men and women used wigs and hairpieces to enhance their look. Cleopatra, one of the most famous historical figures, was known for wearing elaborate braided wigs made from human hair, wool, or palm fibers. Egyptians also dyed their extensions black or blue using plant-based dyes to match their natural hair or make a bold statement. Extensions were more than just a fashion accessory—they also symbolized power, status, and even divine protection. Photo: Universal Images Group Editoria/Getty Images The Roman Empire: Hair as a Status Symbol During the Roman Empire, wealthy women adorned their hair with intricate styles using extensions made from human hair or animal fur. Blonde hair extensions were especially popular, as blondes were often viewed as exotic. Roman women would often import blonde hair from the Germanic tribes and wear them to achieve this coveted look. The use of hair extensions among the elite signified wealth and social standing. Photo: Pinterest 17th-18th Century Europe: Wigs Galore Hair extensions in the form of wigs became a significant part of European fashion during the 17th and 18th centuries. Royals like King Louis XIV of France and Queen Elizabeth I were known for wearing large, elaborate wigs, which later became popular among aristocrats. These wigs were often powdered and styled to convey authority, fashion, and status. By the late 18th century, wigs had become smaller and more refined, but their role in enhancing appearances persisted. Photo: Portrait of King Louis XIV/britannica.com Victorian Era: Hair as Keepsakes In the 19th century, during the Victorian era, hair extensions continued to gain popularity. Human hair was often used to create intricate hairstyles, but there was also a more sentimental use of hair during this time. People would weave the hair of deceased loved ones into mourning jewelry or keepsakes. This practice highlighted the belief in the beauty and symbolic power of hair. Photo: Pinterest 20th Century Hollywood: Hair Extensions on the Big Screen With the advent of Hollywood glamour in the 20th century, hair extensions found a new stage—literally. Stars like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth popularized voluminous and glamorous hairstyles that often relied on hairpieces and extensions. During this period, hair extensions were predominantly reserved for celebrities, as they were expensive and difficult to access for the average person. Photo: fanpop.com The 1980s: Hair Extensions Go Mainstream The 1980s marked a turning point for hair extensions, as they became more accessible to the general public. The development of clip-in and tape-in extensions made it easier for people to achieve longer, fuller hair without the need for permanent bonding or intricate sewing. Pop icons like Madonna and Cher helped popularize the trend, with big, bold hair becoming a defining feature of the decade. Photo: Pinterest Modern Day: Customizable Hair Extensions for All Nowadays, hair extensions have grown into a massive global industry worth billions, catering to diverse beauty needs and styles. Whether you’re looking for a quick change with clip-ins or a long-term transformation with sew-ins, there are countless options to choose from. Modern technology has also improved the quality of hair extensions, with ethically sourced human hair becoming the gold standard. From balayage blends to custom color matching, hair extensions have become a go-to beauty tool for everyone, from celebrities to everyday people. Photos: unsplash.com In recent years, influencers and beauty bloggers have further popularized extensions, demonstrating how easy it is to switch up hairstyles while maintaining a natural look. Whether you want to add volume, length, or experiment with color, hair extensions have come a long way since Cleopatra's braided wigs! Hair extensions have stood the test of time, adapting to various fashion trends and technological advances. From ancient Egypt to modern-day salons, they remain a symbol of beauty and empowerment.

Bulk Buying Without Compromise: How Superior Hair Factory Maintains Quality in Large-Scale Production

Bulk Buying Without Compromise: How Superior Hair Factory Maintains Quality in Large-Scale Production

When it comes to purchasing hair extensions in bulk, the last thing salon owners or retailers want to worry about is a drop in quality. At Superior Hair, we understand that maintaining the highest level of excellence, even during large-scale production, is critical. That’s why we’ve developed a meticulous and well-refined process to make sure that every strand of hair meets our superior standards—whether you're ordering a few bundles or a massive shipment for wholesale. So, how do we make sure that quality is never compromised, even when handling large volumes? Let’s take a closer look at the methods we use to guarantee that every product that leaves our factory is top-tier, making us a trusted partner for salons and retailers around the world. 56 Stages of Perfection: Our Production Process At Superior Hair, maintaining quality starts with the process itself. Every product we produce undergoes a detailed, 56-stage production process. This isn't just about running hair through machines—each step is carefully managed to ensure that quality is consistent from start to finish. From sorting the hair by texture and length to washing and conditioning it, each phase plays a crucial role in shaping the final product. What’s key in this process is the attention to detail. Our team meticulously inspects the hair at every stage, making sure it meets our strict standards for texture, strength, and appearance. With 56 separate stages, there are multiple checkpoints to catch any inconsistencies before they make their way into the final product. This ensures that every extension, whether it's part of a small or large order, is flawless. Advanced Machinery and Technology While many might think hair extensions are a purely manual process, Superior Hair integrates advanced machinery to ensure consistency across large-scale orders. Our cutting-edge equipment helps sort and process hair with incredible precision, allowing us to manage bulk orders without sacrificing the quality our customers expect. But technology alone isn’t enough. We combine these machines with the expertise of our skilled team members who oversee every step, providing a perfect balance between automated precision and human attention to detail. This ensures that our products are crafted to the highest standards, even in high-volume production. Internal and External Quality Inspections Maintaining the Superior Hair standard of excellence requires a multi-layered approach to quality control. We have two dedicated teams responsible for making sure that every batch of hair meets our benchmarks—our internal inspection team and an external audit department. The internal inspection team works throughout the production process, checking everything from the raw material selection to the final stages of production. They ensure that every product adheres to our strict guidelines for texture, strength, and appearance. But we don’t stop there. Our external audit department then steps in for an additional layer of review. This department is solely responsible for ensuring that Superior Hair's products live up to our promise of top-tier quality. This double-layered inspection process is what sets us apart from competitors. By having both internal and external checks, we make sure that nothing is overlooked, and every customer receives hair extensions that reflect our commitment to excellence. Trusted by Salon Owners and Retailers WorldWide For salon owners and retailers, offering consistent, high-quality products is key to building trust with their clients. A single bad batch of hair extensions can hurt their reputation. That's why so many turn to Superior Hair—we’ve earned a reputation for reliability, even in bulk orders. Our attention to detail, commitment to ethical sourcing, and use of advanced machinery mean that our wholesale clients can depend on us to deliver superior products every time. They trust that no matter the volume of their order, they will receive premium quality hair extensions that are soft, durable, and long-lasting. Real Talk: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Natural

Real Talk: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Natural

Investing in high-quality hair extensions is an excellent way to achieve longer, fuller hair instantly. However, the secret to pulling off a picture-perfect look is making sure your extensions blend seamlessly with your natural hair. At Superior Hair Extensions, we know that maintaining a natural appearance with extensions is a top priority. Whether you're an expert or a first-time user, these tips will help you keep your hair extensions looking as natural as possible. Choose the Right Extensions for Your Hair Type The first step to achieving a natural look with hair extensions is selecting the right type. Consider your hair's texture, color, and length to find extensions that match perfectly. At Superior Hair Extensions, we have a wide range of options to suit various hair types and styles, making it easier for you to find your perfect match. Color Match: The closer the color of your extensions is to your natural hair, the more seamless the blend will be. Texture Matters: If you have curly or wavy hair, choose extensions with a similar texture for a unified look. Length Compatibility: Choose extensions that complement your current hair length to avoid an obvious transition. Proper Hair Extensions Installation Is Key Even the highest quality hair extensions can look fake if they're not installed the right way. Whether you’re using clip-ins, tape-ins, or wefts, following the proper installation techniques is important. Clip-Ins: For a natural look, section your hair and attach the clip-ins close to the roots, ensuring they’re evenly distributed. Tape-Ins: Make sure the tape is properly secured, and the extensions lay flat against your scalp to avoid any visible lines. For a flawless and natural finish, they should be installed by a professional. Halo Wefts: If using a halo weft, ensure it sits securely on your head and is well-hidden by your natural hair, blending seamlessly for a natural look. Proper installation not only helps your extensions look natural but also prevents them from slipping or becoming visible throughout the day. Blending Your Hair Extensions Seamlessly One of the most important steps in keeping your hair extensions looking natural is blending them with your natural hair. This involves styling your hair and extensions together to create a smooth transition. Cut and Layer: After installation, consider having your extensions cut and layered by a professional. This will help them blend more naturally with your natural hair. Style Together: Always style your extensions and natural hair together. Use heat tools like curling irons or straighteners to ensure both your hair and the extensions have the same wave or curl pattern. Tease for Volume: Teasing the roots of your natural hair can help cover the wefts or clips, ensuring they remain undetectable. By focusing on blending, you can achieve a natural, voluminous look that compliments your overall appearance. Maintain Your Hair Extensions Like a Pro In order to keep your extensions looking natural and new over time, you have to carefully take care of them. Good maintenance practices not only extend the life of your hair extensions but also ensure they continue to blend seamlessly with your natural hair. Gentle Washing: Use shampoos that are sulfate-free, and conditioners designed especially for hair extensions. Wash your extensions regularly to keep them clean and soft, but avoid over-washing, as this can lead to dryness. Proper Brushing: Use a brush specifically designed for extensions or a wide-tooth comb to avoid tangling and breakage. Always begin brushing from the ends and work your way up to the roots. Avoid Heat Damage: While heat styling is often necessary to blend your extensions with your natural hair, try to use heat tools at a minimum. When you do use them, apply a heat protection spray to prevent damage. Taking these steps will help keep your extensions in perfect condition which in return, makes them look as natural as possible for as long as possible. Are you ready to transform your hair? The Truth About Hair Extension Myths: What You Need to Know

The Truth About Hair Extension Myths: What You Need to Know

Hair extensions have become a popular go-to solution for anyone looking to add length, volume, or a touch of glamour to their hairstyle. However, with their rising popularity comes a slew of myths and misconceptions that can make it difficult to choose the right options. At Superior Hair Extensions, we believe in providing our customers with the facts. In this article, we'll look into some of the most common hair extension myths to help you choose if hair extensions are right for you.  Myth 1: Hair Extensions Destroy Your Natural Hair One of the most persistent myths about hair extensions is that they inevitably damage or destroy your natural hair. In actuality, hair extensions are completely safe and can even preserve your natural hair if they are put and cared for properly. Proper Installation Is Crucial: Damage typically arises from incorrect or overly tight installation of extensions. Whether you're using tape-ins, clip-ins, or other types of extensions, it's important to follow the recommended guidelines when it comes to installation. Regular Maintenance: Keeping your extensions clean and well-maintained helps prevent unnecessary strain on your natural hair. Protective Styling: Extensions can actually protect your natural hair by reducing the need for daily styling and exposure to heat from hair irons for example. When you choose hair extensions that are high-quality and follow proper care instructions, you can enjoy the benefits without worrying about damaging your natural hair. Myth 2: Hair Extensions Look Fake and Unnatural Another common misconception is that hair extensions always look obvious and unnatural. While poorly made or improperly installed extensions might not blend well, high-quality extensions can look incredibly natural when matched and applied correctly. Color Matching: The secret to natural-looking extensions is choosing a color that closely matches your natural hair. Superior Hair Extensions offers a wide range of shades to help you find the perfect match.Blending and Styling: Blending your extensions with your natural hair through cutting and styling ensures a seamless transition that looks natural and polished.Texture Matters: Choosing extensions with a texture similar to your natural hair helps create a cohesive look that enhances your overall appearance. With the right extensions and a little styling know-how, you can create a look that's nearly identical to your natural hair. Myth 3: Hair Extensions Are Only for Length Many people believe that hair extensions are solely for adding length, but they’re actually much more than that. Hair extensions can be used to add volume, create intricate styles, or even introduce new colors without the commitment of coloring your natural hair.Volume Boost: If you’re struggling with thin or fine hair, hair extensions can add the volume you’ve always wanted.Special Occasion Styling: Extensions are perfect for creating updos and other detailed styles for special occasions.Temporary Color: Want to try a new color without the commitment? Extensions allow you to experiment with highlights, lowlights, or even bold colors without altering your natural hair.At Superior Hair Extensions, we offer a variety of options to help you achieve your desired look, whether it’s longer hair, fuller volume, or a temporary change in color. Myth 4: Hair Extensions Are High Maintenance The idea that hair extensions require an excessive amount of maintenance is another common myth. While extensions do require some care, they’re not as high maintenance as many people think.Easy Care Routine: With the right products and techniques, caring for your extensions is straightforward. Use shampoos that are sulfate-free and conditioners to keep them looking their best.Longevity: High-quality extensions, like those from Superior Hair Extensions, are designed to last with proper care, making them a great investment.Styling Freedom: Extensions can be washed, styled, and treated just like your natural hair, giving you the freedom to enjoy your look without a complicated routine.By following simple care instructions, you can enjoy beautiful, long-lasting hair extensions without the hassle. If you’re ready to try out hair extensions with confidence, Superior Hair Extensions has everything you need. Why Your Hair Extensions Feel ‘Plasticky’ and How to Avoid It

Why Your Hair Extensions Feel ‘Plasticky’ and How to Avoid It

Hair extensions are an amazing way to add length, volume, and style to your natural hair, but nothing is more disappointing than realizing your new extensions feel 'plasticky' or synthetic. The good news is that with the right knowledge, you can avoid this issue and invest in hair extensions that feel as natural as they look. At Superior Hair Extensions, we believe in helping you make the best choice for your hair. In this guide, we’ll look into why some hair extensions feel plasticky and offer tips on choosing high-quality, natural-feeling extensions.  Understanding Why Hair Extensions Feel Plasticky The plasticky feel in hair extensions often comes from synthetic materials. Synthetic hair is typically made from various types of plastic fibers, such as acrylic, nylon, polyester or mixed animal hair. These materials are not only less expensive to produce but also less natural in appearance and texture compared to human hair. Here are a few reasons why your hair extensions might feel plasticky: Synthetic Materials: The most common reason for plasticky-feeling extensions is that they are made from synthetic fibers. While these fibers can be styled and colored to some extent, they lack the softness, natural movement, and shine of real human hair. Low-Quality Blends: Some hair extensions are a mix of human hair and synthetic fibers. While these might be marketed as ‘real hair extensions,’ the synthetic blend can still give them a plasticky feel, especially after washing or styling. Coating and Treatments: Even some human hair extensions can feel plasticky if they have been heavily coated with silicone or other treatments to make them appear smoother or shinier. Over time, these coatings can wear off, revealing a less desirable texture beneath. How to Choose Natural-Feeling Hair Extensions To avoid the disappointment of plasticky hair extensions, it’s important to know what to look for when shopping for extensions. Here are some tips to help you choose extensions that feel as natural as possible: Choose 100% Human Hair: Always opt for extensions that are labeled as 100% human hair. These extensions are made entirely from real human hair, offering a natural look and feel that synthetic materials can’t match. At Superior Hair Extensions, all our products are crafted from high-quality, ethically sourced human hair that naturally blend with your own hair. Check the Source: Quality starts at the source. Look for companies that are transparent about where they source their hair. Reliable sources often indicate better quality hair, which translates to a more natural feel. Avoid Synthetic Blends: Be cautious of extensions that are labeled as ‘human hair blends’ or ‘heat-resistant synthetic hair.’ These blends often contain synthetic fibers that can give the hair a plasticky texture, especially after prolonged use. Invest in Quality: High-quality hair extensions may cost more, but they are worth the investment. Not only do they feel more natural, but they also last longer and can be styled and treated just like your natural hair.
