Machine Weft Hair Extensions: The Sew-In Standard

Quick answer

Machine weft hair extensions are bundles of Remy hair sewn onto a reinforced strip by sewing machine, then anchored to a beaded row by stitching or micro-beading. Superior Hair machine wefts are 20 inch, 50g and 50cm wide, sit 6 to 8 weeks per application, and can be reused up to three times. Stylist install only.

Every weft method launched in the last five years gets measured against the machine weft. It is the oldest professional format on the shelf, the sturdiest, and the one most stylists learned to sew first. This guide covers what machine weft hair extensions are, the hair types they belong on, how the row behaves over a 6 to 8 week cycle, and when to steer a client toward a flatter weft instead.

What a machine weft actually is

A machine weft is made by feeding hair through a sewing machine so the strands are stitched onto a reinforced strip. That stitched seam is the whole story. It is what makes the weft shed-resistant, it is what makes it sturdy enough to reuse, and it is also what makes the track thicker than a hand-tied alternative. Nothing about that is a flaw. It is a trade: you get density and durability, and you pay for it in seam depth.

Superior Hair machine wefts are supplied at 20 inch, 50g per weft, 50cm wide, one weft per pack. Two to three packs covers a standard full head, so most installs sit at 100g to 150g of added hair across two or three rows. That is a useful number to say out loud at consultation, because clients hear "weft" and picture something either far heavier or far lighter than what you are actually going to put in.

The hair itself matters more than the seam. Machine wefts are built from 100% Remy human hair with the cuticles intact and running in the same direction, which is what keeps a set from matting at the nape by week four. Superior Hair manufactures its own stock, and you can read how the raw hair is sorted and graded on the Our Hair and Factory page. If you want the longer explanation of why cuticle direction changes how long a set survives, there is a full breakdown in this piece on cuticle-intact double drawn Remy hair.

Wefts, tapes, nano tips and U-tips all solve different hair types. Seeing the professional range side by side makes it easier to decide what you actually want to stock and certify in.

Why the sew-in is still the standard

Machine weft hair extensions are secured two ways, and both start the same: a row of silicone-lined beads clamped along a clean horizontal section. From there you either stitch the weft to that row with needle and thread, or bead the weft directly onto it. The sew-in is the traditional route and still the one most pros default to on thick hair, because the thread distributes load along the entire track instead of concentrating it at individual points.

That is the real argument for a row-based method. Individual bonds put every gram of added weight onto a small cluster of strands, while a weft spreads the same weight along 50cm of stitched seam on an anchored row. For a client with dense, healthy hair who wants serious length, that is a sound way to carry 150g.

The honest downside: the row is visible if the hair above it is not dense enough to cover it, and the install is not quick. Budget 2 to 3 hours. Anyone promising a full head of sewn wefts in an hour is either cutting rows or cutting corners.

Which clients suit machine wefts

Medium to thick hair. That is the short version. The machine-made bond is larger than a hand-tied or silk-base alternative, so it needs a canopy of natural hair above it that can genuinely conceal the track. On fine or sparse hair the seam telegraphs, especially in a ponytail or under direct light, and no amount of clever sectioning fixes that.

When a client's hair is too fine for a machine weft, say so and move them across rather than forcing it. Genius wefts are hand-tied with a much smaller track and suit thin to medium hair, and the seam can be cut anywhere without unraveling, which is covered properly in this article on cutting genius wefts. For the flattest possible result on fine or fragile hair, the invisi butterfly weft installs on micro-beads alone in about 15 minutes and flips to lie against the scalp.

Chair time 2 to 3 hours full head Varies with rows and method About 15 minutes

Installing the row: sectioning, tension, timing

Start on freshly washed hair with no product, oil or leave-in at the root. Beads slip on conditioned hair, and a row that slips in week one migrates all cycle.

Section horizontally and keep the row well inside the perimeter, with enough hair left down to cover the track completely when the head tilts forward. Take the beads on consistent sub-sections so the row sits level rather than scalloping. Clamp firm but not crushed: you want the bead to hold position when you slide a tail comb under it, and you want the client to be able to move their scalp without drag. A row that feels tight in the chair does not loosen into comfort. It stays tight and takes hair with it.

Machine wefts are customizable in width, but the seam is a sewn seam, not a genius seam. Cut it and it can unravel unless you secure and seal the cut end, which is exactly why genius wefts exist as the cut-anywhere option. Plan your row lengths before you pick up scissors, and where you can, fold or double back rather than cut. On most heads a 50cm weft gives you a full nape row with enough left to shape around the sides.

Want the technique certified?

Row placement, tension control, sew-in versus beaded attachment and clean removal are all taught in the Superior Hair Training Academy, so you can add wefts to your service menu properly rather than learning on a paying client.

See the Training Academy

Move-ups, reuse and real lifespan

Book the move-up at 6 to 8 weeks. By then the beaded row has travelled far enough down the growth that the weft hangs away from the scalp, tension shifts, and matting risk climbs at the root. Clients who push to ten or twelve weeks are the ones who come back with tangling above the track.

At every move-up, check three things before you re-install. Bead integrity first: silicone liners wear and a stretched bead will not hold a second cycle. Then the seam, looking for shedding along the stitch line or any soft spot where the strip has been cut previously. Then the client's own hair at the row, checking density and any sign of traction at the section edges. If the natural hair looks stressed, drop a row or move the placement rather than rebuilding on the same sections.

Machine wefts can be reused up to three times, and a well-cared-for set lasts up to a year. That reuse is the commercial argument for the method: your client pays for hair once and pays for maintenance appointments across the year, which is a gentler cost curve than replacing bonded hair every cycle. Be straight with them that reuse depends entirely on aftercare, not on the hair being indestructible.

Color matching and customizing the weft

Match to the mid-lengths and ends, not the root. A weft installed below the occipital sits in the client's darkest zone at the top of the track and blends into their lighter lengths lower down, so matching to root color reads heavy and flat. If the client wears a root shadow or a lived-in base, you want the weft to agree with where their color lands at chin level and below.

Superior Hair stocks the machine weft range in twenty shades, including solid bases, highlighted mixes and balayage blends, and you can compare them against the client's lengths using the machine weft color guide. Two rows in slightly different shades is a legitimate technique on dimensional color work. It reads more natural than a single flat block of one level.

Do not lighten the hair. Extension hair has already been through a chemical process, so bleaching it is unpredictable and risks the integrity of the whole set. Going darker is lower risk but still done at the client's risk, and a toner or gloss is the safer way to close a small gap in tone. If the shade is more than a level or two off, order the right one instead of correcting the wrong one.

The aftercare that decides the outcome

Whether a set reaches three cycles or dies in one comes down to what happens between appointments. Send every weft client home with the same list, in writing.

  • Sulfate-free shampoo and alcohol-free styling products, always.
  • No conditioner at the root or through the bead row. Mid-lengths and ends only.
  • Never brush wet hair, and use an extension-friendly brush when dry.
  • No daily washing. Dry shampoo covers the in-between days.
  • Heat protectant on every tool, and keep irons off the track and the bonds.
  • No coconut oil based products. Argan oil is fine.
  • Loosely braid or gather the hair at night to stop overnight tangling.
  • No tying the hair up for the first week, and no swimming in extensions.

The full routine, including washing technique and product choices, is set out in the Superior Hair care guide, which is worth linking in your booking confirmation email so it is in the client's inbox the day they leave the salon.

Frequently asked questions

What are machine weft hair extensions?

Machine weft hair extensions are bundles of Remy human hair sewn onto a reinforced strip using a sewing machine, creating a durable, shed-resistant track. The weft is attached to a row of silicone-lined beads in the client's hair, either by stitching it on or by beading it directly. Superior Hair machine wefts come at 20 inch, 50g per weft and 50cm wide.

How long do machine weft hair extensions last?

Each application sits for 6 to 8 weeks before the row needs moving up. The hair itself can be reused up to three times, which means a well-maintained set lasts up to a year. Lifespan depends heavily on aftercare: sulfate-free washing, no conditioner at the row, no brushing wet hair, and regular maintenance appointments on schedule.

Are machine wefts suitable for fine hair?

Generally no. Machine-made wefts have a larger bond than hand-tied or silk-base options, so they suit medium to thick hair where the canopy can hide the track. On fine or sparse hair the seam tends to show. Genius wefts have a far smaller track for thin to medium hair, and invisi butterfly wefts sit flattest of all.

How many packs are needed for a full head?

Two to three packs covers a standard full head, with one weft per pack at 50g each. That puts a typical install between 100g and 150g of added hair across two or three rows. Very dense hair or a client wanting significant length will sit at the upper end, while a partial install for volume alone may need only one pack.

Can clients install machine weft extensions themselves?

No. Machine wefts are a professional semi-permanent method requiring a beaded row, correct sectioning and controlled tension, and a full head takes a trained stylist 2 to 3 hours. A self-installed row risks traction on the natural hair and slipping wefts. Clients who want to fit their own hair should be directed to clip-ins, halos or ponytails instead.

Can machine wefts be cut to fit the head?

They can be customized in width, but a machine-sewn seam can unravel at a cut end unless it is secured and sealed. Plan row lengths first and fold or double back where possible rather than cutting. If you want a weft that can be cut anywhere along the seam without unraveling, genius wefts are built specifically for that.

Personalized Hair Care Routine for Extensions: Tailored Tips for Every Hair Type

Personalized Hair Care Routine for Extensions: Tailored Tips for Every Hair Type

Caring for hair extensions is crucial to making sure they look and feel natural, while maintaining their longevity. A personalized hair care routine not only keeps your extensions in prime condition but also supports the health of your natural hair. Here’s how to create a routine that’s perfect for you and your extensions: 1. Choose Extension-Safe Products Selecting the right products is key to maintaining your extensions. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and hydrating conditioners that preserve moisture without causing buildup. These gentle products help to keep both your extensions and natural hair hydrated and healthy. Sulfate-free shampoos prevent dryness and reduce tangling. Lightweight conditioners add moisture without weighing down your hair or making extensions greasy. 2. Cleanse Extensions Properly Washing your extensions regularly is essential, but the frequency depends on the type of extensions you have: Clip-ins: Wash them every 15-20 uses, focusing on product buildup. Sew-ins or tape-ins: Cleanse along with your natural hair every 7-10 days to avoid scalp buildup. Use lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing to prevent tangling or damaging the bonds of your extensions. 3. Detangle with Care Extensions, like natural hair, can easily become tangled, especially when not detangled regularly. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for extensions and always start from the ends, working your way up to minimize breakage. Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to make the process smoother and protect your extensions. 4. Limit Heat Styling Heat styling can shorten the lifespan of your extensions, so it's important to protect them: Always apply a heat protectant spray before using hot tools, and try to use lower heat settings whenever possible. Air-dry your extensions to minimize heat exposure and prevent damage. 5. Regular Maintenance and Trims Maintaining your extensions through regular salon appointments ensures they remain secure and look fresh. Whether you have tape-ins, sew-ins, or other semi-permanent extensions, scheduling a trim every few weeks helps prevent split ends and keeps both your natural hair and extensions in top shape.By following these tips, you can create a personalized hair care routine that keeps your extensions healthy, long-lasting, and beautiful. Consistency is key—your extensions will look and feel their best when they’re cared for properly.

With so many styles to choose from, finding the perfect look that compliments your dress and personal style can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry! We’re here to guide you through the process, so that you shine on your special day. 1. Consider Your Dress Style  Photo: Shutterstock The first step in choosing your bridal hairstyle is to consider the style of your wedding dress. If you're wearing a classic ball gown, elegant updos or soft curls can create a timeless look. For a bohemian-style dress, loose waves adorned with floral accessories may be the perfect match. Take some time to visualize how different hairstyles will look with your gown, as this will help narrow down your options. 2. Think About Your Wedding Theme Photo: Pinterest Your wedding theme plays a significant role in your hairstyle choice. A beach wedding may call for a relaxed, beachy look, while a formal ceremony may require a more polished style. Incorporate elements of your theme into your hairstyle for a cohesive look. For example, if you're having a vintage-themed wedding, consider retro hairstyles like finger waves or a classic chignon. 3. Factor in Your Hair Type Photo: hadviser.com Your natural hair type can greatly influence your hairstyle choices. If you have fine hair, you may want to consider hairstyles that add volume, such as soft curls or textured updos. Conversely, if you have thick hair, you can experiment with more intricate styles, like braids or twisted updos. If you’re looking to enhance your hair’s length or volume, hair extensions can be a fantastic solution. They provide the perfect way to achieve the length and fullness you desire without the commitment. 4. Explore Different Styles When it comes to bridal hairstyles, the options are nearly endless. Here are some stunning hairstyle ideas you might love: Loose Waves: Perfect for a laid-back or beach wedding, loose waves give a soft and romantic feel. Pair them with floral accessories for a boho look. Photo: janeinthewoods.com Updos: Timeless and elegant, updos can range from sleek and polished to soft and romantic. Try Out Hair Extensions Photo: stylemepretty.com If you're dreaming of a specific hairstyle but your natural hair doesn’t quite fit the bill, hair extensions can be your best friend. Whether you want to add length, volume, or both, extensions allow you to achieve the perfect look without waiting for your hair to grow. Clip-in extensions are a popular choice for brides since they’re easy to apply and remove, giving you flexibility on your big day. 6. Schedule a Trial Run Photo: Ashley Smith/Instagram Once you've narrowed down your hairstyle options, it's essential to schedule a trial run with your hairstylist. This will give you the opportunity to see how your chosen hairstyle looks with your dress and make any necessary adjustments. Bring any hair accessories you plan to wear, and don't hesitate to ask for their professional opinion on what styles will work best for you. 7. Keep Comfort in Mind Photo: annasposagroup.com On your big day, you’ll want to exude comfort and confidence. Ensure that your hairstyle feels secure and that you can move freely. Avoid styles that might cause tension or discomfort, especially if you plan to wear your hair down for the reception. Hair extensions can also help distribute weight evenly, allowing for a comfortable fit while adding beautiful volume or length. Choosing the perfect bridal hairstyle is an important part of your wedding planning process. By considering your dress style, wedding theme, hair type, and personal preferences, you can find a look that enhances your beauty on your special day. And remember, hair extensions can be a wonderful way to achieve your dream hairstyle, offering versatility and a flawless finish. Take your time, experiment, and enjoy this beautiful journey toward your wedding day!

Seasonal Hair Extension Maintenance: How to Keep Your Hair Gorgeous All Year

Seasonal Hair Extension Maintenance: How to Keep Your Hair Gorgeous All Year

Hair extensions are a game-changer for anyone looking to add volume, length, or a little extra glam to their look. But, just like natural hair, they need a little TLC—especially when the seasons change. The weather can have a major impact on your extensions, from the dry, chilly air in winter to the blazing heat of summer. With a few simple adjustments to your hair care routine, you can keep your extensions looking fabulous all year round. Let’s look into how to give your extensions the love they need through each season! Spring: Time for a Refresh Spring is all about renewal, and it’s the perfect season to give your hair extensions a fresh start. As the weather warms up, humidity levels increase, and you might notice more frizz or tangles in your extensions. Tips for spring hair extension care: Clarifying treatment: After a long winter of heavy styling products, your extensions may need a little detox. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup but be cautious not to overdo it since extensions can dry out quickly. Lightweight products: With humidity rising, switch to lightweight serums and leave-in conditioners. Heavy creams can weigh your extensions down and leave them looking greasy.   Brush gently: Since spring can be windy, make sure you gently brush your hair extensions to prevent tangling. Use a soft-bristle brush and always start from the ends, working your way up. Summer: Beat the Heat (and Frizz) Summer can be the trickiest season for hair extensions. Between the heat, sun, saltwater, and chlorine, your hair extensions are exposed to a lot of potential damage. But no worries, with the right routine, your extensions can stay sleek and beautiful throughout the summer months. Summer hair extension care tips: UV protection: The sun’s rays can dry out your hair extensions and cause fading. Look for hair care products with UV protection, or wear a chic hat or scarf when you’re out in the sun. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: The summer heat can zap moisture from your extensions. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed for extensions, and consider a weekly deep conditioning treatment to keep your hair silky and soft. Pool and beach protection: Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on extensions, making them brittle and prone to tangling. Before jumping in, dampen your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner to create a barrier. If you’re swimming often, consider wearing a swim cap or tying your hair up in a loose bun to minimize exposure. Fall: Prepare for Cooler Days As fall rolls in, the air starts to dry out, which can lead to brittle hair extensions. This is the season to start preparing for the cooler months ahead by boosting moisture and minimizing heat styling. Fall hair extension care tips: Switch to a richer conditioner: Now’s the time to swap out your lightweight summer products for richer, creamier conditioners that can provide extra moisture. Minimize heat styling: With the weather cooling down, it's tempting to pull out the blow dryer or curling iron more often. Try to limit heat styling, or use a heat protectant spray if you can’t resist those gorgeous waves. Combat frizz: The windy fall air can cause frizz in both natural hair and extensions. Keep frizz at bay with anti-frizz serums and by avoiding over washing, which can strip your hair of its natural oils. Winter: Fight the Chill and Dryness Winter brings its own set of challenges—cold air, indoor heating, and static can all wreak havoc on your extensions. Keeping them moisturized and protected from the elements is the key to getting through the season with healthy, gorgeous hair. Winter hair extension care tips: Deep conditioning treatments: Winter dryness can cause extensions to look dull and lifeless. Deep conditioning treatments, done once or twice a week, will help lock in moisture and keep your extensions soft and manageable. Static control: Indoor heating can cause static, making your extensions more difficult to style. Use a leave-in conditioner or anti-static spray to keep your hair smooth and frizz-free. Cover up: Winter hats and scarves are your best friends during this season! They not only keep you warm but also protect your hair extensions from the cold, dry air. Just be careful to choose soft, non-abrasive fabrics to avoid friction that can cause tangling or breakage. Year-Round Care No matter the season, some hair extension care tips are universal: Brush regularly: Use a gentle, soft-bristle brush to keep your extensions tangle-free. Be extra gentle at the roots to avoid loosening bonds or clips. Avoid over washing: Hair extensions don’t produce natural oils like your scalp, so over washing can lead to dryness. If you can avoid it, do not wash your hair more than twice a week. Heat protection is key: Whether you’re blow-drying, curling, or straightening your extensions, always use a heat protectant spray to shield them from damage. With these seasonal hair extension care tips, you’ll keep your hair looking fabulous and feeling healthy all year long. Just a few small changes to your routine can make a huge difference in how your extensions hold up to the elements—whether you’re braving the summer sun or the winter chill!

It’s a subtle way to introduce warmer tones to your hair, adding depth and dimension that’s perfect for the season.  Photo: ROMEU FELIPE/Instagram 2. Loose Waves and Curls Loose, beachy waves may be synonymous with summer, but softer waves and curls are just as stylish for fall. The relaxed texture pairs perfectly with cozy fall sweaters and scarves, giving you an effortless yet chic look. If you’re using clip-in or tape-in hair extensions, creating waves is a breeze. Simply curl your natural hair and the extensions together with a curling iron or wand for a seamless blend. For a more natural, undone look, brush through the curls with your fingers after curling to loosen them up. Photo: ROBERT LEVI/Instagram 3. Low Ponytails Ponytails are a go-to hairstyle for their simplicity and versatility, and they’re especially trendy this fall. A sleek, low ponytail paired with hair extensions gives you that extra length and volume for an elevated look. To achieve a flawless low ponytail, gather your natural hair and hair extensions at the nape of your neck, securing it with a hair tie. For a polished finish, take a small section of hair and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to conceal the hair tie. Want to add a fall twist? Tie a velvet scrunchie or a silk scarf around your ponytail for a touch of autumn-inspired elegance. It’s a simple way to take a classic hairstyle and make it fall-ready. Photo: Pinterest 4. Braids with Hair Extensions Braids never go out of style, but they’re especially popular during the fall when you can rock cozy, layered outfits with intricate hairstyles. Hair extensions make it easy to create fuller, more voluminous braids that are perfect for this season. One trendy option is the side-swept braid. To achieve this look, gather your hair and extensions to one side and braid it loosely for a soft, romantic effect. You can even incorporate some of those warm autumn colors by using balayage hair extensions or adding in a few temporary highlights. Photo: Amanda Diedrich/Instagram 5. Messy Buns and Top Knots Fall is all about cozy, comfortable vibes, and nothing says effortless chic like a messy bun or top knot. Hair extensions can make these styles look fuller and more voluminous, perfect for those days when you want a stylish yet easy look. To create a voluminous messy bun, gather your hair and extensions into a loose ponytail, twist it around the base, and secure it with bobby pins. Pull out a few strands in the front for that effortlessly undone look. For a top knot, simply gather your hair into a high ponytail, wrap it around itself, and secure it with pins. Extensions will give you that full, thick look, making your top knot look more polished even when it’s styled to be messy. Photo: Pinterest 6. Layered Looks Layering isn’t just for your wardrobe this fall—it’s a major trend for hair too. If you want to create dimension and movement, consider adding layers to your hair extensions. Layered extensions can give your hair a softer, more natural look while adding volume and length. Whether you’re styling your hair down, in waves, or in a braid, layers add texture and interest, making your hairstyle look more dynamic and effortless. The History of Hair Extensions: From Cleopatra to Today

The History of Hair Extensions: From Cleopatra to Today

Hair extensions have a rich and fascinating history that spans cultures, continents, and centuries. From royalty to modern-day celebrities, the desire for longer, fuller hair has always been a symbol of beauty and status. Let’s take a fun journey through time to see how hair extensions evolved, from ancient Egypt to the red carpets of Hollywood. Ancient Egypt: The Origin of Hair Extensions Hair extensions can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt, where both men and women used wigs and hairpieces to enhance their look. Cleopatra, one of the most famous historical figures, was known for wearing elaborate braided wigs made from human hair, wool, or palm fibers. Egyptians also dyed their extensions black or blue using plant-based dyes to match their natural hair or make a bold statement. Extensions were more than just a fashion accessory—they also symbolized power, status, and even divine protection. Photo: Universal Images Group Editoria/Getty Images The Roman Empire: Hair as a Status Symbol During the Roman Empire, wealthy women adorned their hair with intricate styles using extensions made from human hair or animal fur. Blonde hair extensions were especially popular, as blondes were often viewed as exotic. Roman women would often import blonde hair from the Germanic tribes and wear them to achieve this coveted look. The use of hair extensions among the elite signified wealth and social standing. Photo: Pinterest 17th-18th Century Europe: Wigs Galore Hair extensions in the form of wigs became a significant part of European fashion during the 17th and 18th centuries. Royals like King Louis XIV of France and Queen Elizabeth I were known for wearing large, elaborate wigs, which later became popular among aristocrats. These wigs were often powdered and styled to convey authority, fashion, and status. By the late 18th century, wigs had become smaller and more refined, but their role in enhancing appearances persisted. Human hair was often used to create intricate hairstyles, but there was also a more sentimental use of hair during this time. People would weave the hair of deceased loved ones into mourning jewelry or keepsakes. This practice highlighted the belief in the beauty and symbolic power of hair. Photo: Pinterest 20th Century Hollywood: Hair Extensions on the Big Screen With the advent of Hollywood glamour in the 20th century, hair extensions found a new stage—literally. Stars like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth popularized voluminous and glamorous hairstyles that often relied on hairpieces and extensions. During this period, hair extensions were predominantly reserved for celebrities, as they were expensive and difficult to access for the average person. Photo: fanpop.com The 1980s: Hair Extensions Go Mainstream The 1980s marked a turning point for hair extensions, as they became more accessible to the general public. The development of clip-in and tape-in extensions made it easier for people to achieve longer, fuller hair without the need for permanent bonding or intricate sewing. Pop icons like Madonna and Cher helped popularize the trend, with big, bold hair becoming a defining feature of the decade.
