Seamless Tape-In Hair Extensions: The Complete Guide

Quick answer

Seamless tape in hair extensions are 4-cm wefts of Remy human hair on a thin adhesive bond, sandwiched around a section of your own hair by a stylist. They lie flat with no sew line, suit fine to thick hair, sit for 8 to 10 weeks between move-ups, and can be reused up to four times.

Tape-ins have a reputation problem left over from the thick, rubbery bonds of a decade ago. The seamless version fixed most of what people disliked: the bond is smaller, lighter, and flat enough that you can part your hair over it. This guide covers what you are actually buying, how many packs you need, what happens in the chair, and what it takes to keep a set looking like your own hair rather than something stuck to it.

New to semi-permanent hair?

Tape-ins are one of seven professional methods Superior Hair makes, and they are not automatically the right one. Seeing the full range side by side is the fastest way to work out where your hair fits.

Browse all professional semi-permanent methods →

What seamless tape-in hair extensions are

A seamless tape-in is a flat weft of hair about 4 cm wide, attached to a strip of medical-grade adhesive rather than stitched to a track. There is no sew line, which is the detail the name refers to. Traditional wefts have a visible seam where the hair is machine-sewn; a seamless bond does not, so it disguises easily under a natural part.

They are fitted in pairs. Your stylist takes a fine section of your own hair, places one weft underneath it and one on top, then presses the two together so your hair is sandwiched between them. Each pack contains 10 wefts, which is 5 of those sandwiches.

The hair itself matters more than the bond. Superior Hair uses 100% Remy human hair with the cuticles intact and running in the same direction, which is why a well-kept set stays smooth instead of matting at the nape after a few washes. Hair that has had its cuticle stripped feels fine in the first month and then starts to tangle against itself. If you want the longer version of why cuticle alignment changes how a set ages, there is a breakdown of double drawn Remy hair on the Superior Hair blog.

How seamless tape-ins compare to other methods

Most people arrive deciding between three or four methods rather than shopping for tape-ins specifically. Here is how the closest options line up on the numbers that actually affect your decision.

Method How it attaches Wear per fitting Reuses Best for
Seamless tape-in Adhesive sandwich, 4-cm wefts 8 to 10 weeks Up to 4 Fine to thick hair wanting flat, low-profile length
Invisi-tape skin weft Ultra-thin bond mimicking the scalp 6 to 10 weeks Up to 3 Very fine hair, or anyone who wears tight parts and updos
Nano tip 1 g strands clamped into silicone-lined beads 6 to 10 weeks Up to 3 Hairlines, face-framing, no heat or adhesive at all
Seamless clip-in Clips on silicone wefts, worn at home Hours, in and out daily Unlimited Occasional length with no salon commitment

The honest read: tape-ins win on wear time and reuse, and they are quick to move up. If your hair is very fine or you wear a hard part daily, the invisi-tape skin weft range hides better. If you want extensions right up at the hairline, or you dislike the idea of adhesive entirely, nano tips are the better fit because each strand rotates 360 degrees. And if you are not ready to book a salon appointment every couple of months, seamless clip-ins give you most of the look with none of the maintenance schedule.

Who seamless tape-ins suit, and who should choose something else

Seamless bonds are smaller and lighter than traditional tape bonds, which is what makes them workable on thinner hair. They suit hair from fine through to thick, and they are particularly good if you want length that behaves like your own hair when it is down: no ridge, no lifting, no shadow under a blow-dry.

They are less suited to a few situations. Very short hair does not give enough coverage over the top weft, so bonds show. Hair that is actively shedding or breaking should be assessed by a stylist before anything is bonded to it, because tape adds weight to the root. And if you swim regularly, tape-ins are the wrong method; chlorine and salt water both degrade the adhesive, and Superior Hair advises against wearing extensions to swim.

Weight is worth thinking about too. If your natural hair is genuinely sparse rather than just fine, a full head of tape-ins may be more than your roots should carry. This is a conversation to have with a stylist before you buy, not after.

How many packs, what length, and what weight

This is where most first orders go wrong, usually by under-buying. Superior Hair's seamless tape-ins come in four lengths, and the weight climbs with the length:

  • 14 inch, 22 g per pack, 2.2 g per weft
  • 18 inch, 28 g per pack, 2.8 g per weft
  • 22 inch, 30 g per pack, 3.0 g per weft
  • 26 inch, 35 g per pack, 3.5 g per weft

Every pack holds 10 wefts, or 5 sandwiches. For added volume without much extra length, 1 to 2 packs is usually enough. For a standard full head, plan on 4 to 6 packs. Thick or very long natural hair sits at the top of that range, and sometimes above it, because the extensions have to match the density of what is already there or the ends look thin by comparison.

On length: pick based on where your hair currently ends, not on the number you like the sound of. A 26 inch set on shoulder-length hair is a big jump and needs enough packs to avoid a see-through finish. Going up one or two lengths at a time reads more naturally and is easier to blend when your stylist cuts the set in.

Getting the color right

Color is the single biggest reason a set looks obvious. The seamless tape-in range currently runs to more than 50 shades across blondes, browns, blacks, auburns, grays, balayage and ombre blends, highlighted multi-tones, and rooted shades, which exist specifically so the color at the bond is darker than the mid-lengths and grows out without a line.

Match to your mid-lengths and ends rather than your roots, since that is where the extension hair actually sits. If your own color is dimensional, a single flat shade will fight it; a highlighted or balayage blend usually reads better. The seamless tape-in color guide shows every shade in the line so you can compare tones properly instead of judging from a product thumbnail.

One thing to plan around: color your own hair before your fitting, not after. Superior Hair advises against dyeing or treating your hair in the 24 hours before application and the 48 hours after, and the extensions themselves should not be bleached or lightened.

Not sure of your shade?

Send a few photos of your hair in natural light, front, back, and sides, and the Superior Hair team will match your shade for you before you commit to a full set.

What happens at your fitting

Seamless tape-ins are a professional install. They are among the easier methods in the semi-permanent range, but placement, tension, and section size all affect whether your natural hair comes through the next few months intact, so this is salon work rather than a home project. A full head typically takes around an hour.

Arrive with freshly washed hair and no product in it. Residue, oil, and silicone all stop the adhesive gripping, and a bond that never grips properly will slide within a fortnight. Your stylist will section, place the wefts in rows, then cut and blend the set into your own layers, which is the step that does most of the work in making it look like hair rather than length that has been added.

After that, wait at least 24 hours before your first wash, and avoid tying your hair up during the first week while the bonds settle. If you do not already have a stylist who fits this method, you can find a Superior Hair salon near you.

Move-ups, aftercare, and how long a set lasts

A set of seamless tape-ins sits for 8 to 10 weeks before it needs repositioning. Your hair grows, the bonds travel down with it, and at some point they are far enough from the scalp to be visible and to tug. At the move-up appointment your stylist removes the wefts, re-tapes them, and puts them back at the root.

The same hair can go through that cycle up to four times with proper care, which is what makes the method economical over a year compared with buying fresh hair every couple of months. Care is the variable there, not luck. The habits that decide it:

  • Sulfate-free shampoo and alcohol-free styling products, always.
  • Conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends only, never at the roots or bonds.
  • No coconut oil based products, which break down the adhesive. Argan oil is fine.
  • Never brush wet hair, and use an extensions-friendly brush when it is dry.
  • Heat protectant every time, and keep hot tools away from the bonds themselves.
  • Loosely braid or tie your hair back at night to stop it twisting around the wefts.
  • Wash less often than you think. Dry shampoo between washes is better than daily shampooing.

Tangling at the nape is the most common complaint, and it is nearly always a care issue rather than a hair-quality one. There is a fuller routine, including what to do when a weft starts to slip, in the Superior Hair guide to caring for tape-in extensions.

Frequently asked questions

Are seamless tape-in hair extensions damaging?

Seamless tape-ins are the least damaging of the semi-permanent methods because the bond is small, light, and spreads weight across a 4-cm weft rather than a single point. Damage comes from poor placement, too much weight for the hair, or skipping move-ups, not from the method itself. A professional install and an 8 to 10 week schedule keep the risk low.

How long do seamless tape-in hair extensions last?

Each fitting lasts 8 to 10 weeks before the wefts need repositioning at the root. The hair itself can be re-taped and reused up to four times with proper care, so one set of Remy human hair generally covers close to a year of wear before it is replaced.

Can I install seamless tape-in extensions myself?

No. All semi-permanent extensions, tape-ins included, should be applied by a certified stylist. Section size, tension, and how far the bonds sit from the scalp all affect whether your natural hair stays healthy. If you want extensions you can put in yourself, seamless clip-ins are the at-home option.

How many packs of seamless tape-in extensions do I need?

For extra volume, 1 to 2 packs. For a standard full head, 4 to 6 packs. Each pack contains 10 wefts, which makes 5 sandwiches. Thicker or longer natural hair sits at the upper end of that range, because the extensions need to match your existing density or the ends will look sparse.

Do seamless tape-ins work on fine or thinning hair?

They work well on fine hair, since the seamless bond is much smaller and lighter than a traditional tape bond. Genuinely thinning or shedding hair is a different question, and should be looked at by a stylist or a doctor before anything is bonded to it. Invisi-tape skin wefts or a topper may suit better.

Can I swim or use heat tools with seamless tape-ins?

Heat tools are fine with a heat protectant, as long as you keep them away from the bonds and the root area. Swimming is not recommended: chlorine and salt water both degrade the adhesive and dry out the hair, which shortens how many times a set can be reused.

What causes human hair extensions to vary in quality?

What causes human hair extensions to vary in quality?

Human hair extensions are an excellent solution to achieving long, flowing, and natural-looking hair. But before getting extensions, it’s vital to know that these extra inches of hair come in different forms of grade and quality. As hair is a natural product that comes from various individuals, no two sets of hair extensions will be the same. Knowing which one suits you best will help you get the look you desire. We share the factors that cause the quality of human hair extensions to vary. 1. Price When you buy hair extensions in NZ, you’ll quickly learn that you get the quality you pay for. Price varies greatly with hair extensions; synthetic hair extensions are a lot cheaper than high-quality and real human hair. More often than not, cheap synthetic hair will not blend as well with your own tresses compared to natural hair that offers fuller, natural-looking locks. 2. The type of hair used in extensions The texture of your hair extension will also depend on the kind of hair used to create the hair extension itself. While there are synthetic options in the market, the most natural option for extensions is human hair. Reputable hair extension suppliers will give you three basic categories to choose from when shopping for human hair extensions: Virgin Virgin hair extensions use hair that has never undergone chemical processes, treatments, or alterations in any way. This means no dyes, bleaches, or perms have been done after collection. Virgin hair is as natural of a hair extension option as one is ever going to get. Remy Also known as cuticle hair, Remy is healthy and non-processed human hair wherein each strand is carefully selected to ensure the cuticle remains intact. Remy hair runs in the same direction, allowing it to have a soft and silky texture. Remy extensions are also single-sourced, meaning the hair comes from a single person. 3. Grading Grading is also important in determining the quality of your hair extensions. At Superior Hair, we have three different grades of virgin Remy hair extensions: A Grade A grade is medium-grade 100% human hair that has been subjected to a more basic production process. It’s one of the most cost-effective options and remains a top seller in the hair industry because of its quality and price. AAA Grade AAA grade is human hair that is more conditioned and designed to be longer lasting than A grade. AAA grade is processed to handle more washes yet remain soft, shiny, and healthy for longer. Premium Grade Premium grade is the highest-quality processed human hair that is available at Superior Hair. Premium-grade Remy hair has strength and quality that are very similar to Virgin hair and can last up to a year with proper care. The hair under this category has been gently coloured to bring you a wide variety of natural-looking hair colours.   4. Installation The hairstylist you choose is just as important as the hair extension itself. Why? Because the fixation method and placement skills will affect how naturally your extensions will blend with your natural mane, no matter the hair texture. You need to work with a professional who knows how to apply and remove extensions professionally to avoid hair damage. Colour experience is also a must. An inaccurate colour match will make your extensions obvious. Another non-negotiable is their experience in haircuts. After extensions are put in, you’ll need a haircut that can make your extensions more natural and seamless-looking, with layers that naturally blend your own hair with your new hair. Get premium quality hair extensions from Superior Hair Not all human hair extensions are designed the same, but what matters most is choosing one that’s most suitable for your hair type. At Superior Hair, we offer a wide range of high-quality hair extensions that allow you to achieve gorgeous and natural-looking locks. Our extensions are 100% ethically sourced and come smoothly out of the box – ready as they are or can be styled as you pleased! Our team can also help you find the perfect shade with our expert colour matching service to make sure your extensions are as natural-looking as possible.

Common hair extension myths debunked with superior hair

Common hair extension myths debunked with superior hair

In the past decade, hair extensions have become more accessible to women. Hair extensions are available in all kinds of textures, colours and types. One can use them to fake a bang, salvage a haircut that went wrong or elevate their daily look. However, there have been several concerns amongst the topic of hair extensions, making some of us hold back on exploring them.  The most common myths about hair extensions 1. Hair Extensions are Very Expensive Many people believe those hair extensions, especially those that are made of 100% human hair, would be too expensive to be afforded by the average person. Let us assure you that this may have been true several years ago when only celebrities could afford human hair extensions. Nowadays, you don't have to rob a bank to get a reasonably priced hair extension of excellent quality. Human hair extensions may be a bit pricier than their synthetic counterparts, but they make up for it through their duration and quality. What's more, they perfectly blend with natural hair, and if taken good care of, last a long time. 2. Hair Extensions Damage Natural Hair This is probably one of the main reasons why most women steer clear of installing hair extensions. However, professionally installed extensions don't affect your hair at all. The installation method and type of hair you go for also matters. If natural extensions are installed professionally, not only will they last longer, but they will also be comfortable and will allow your hair to grow. 3. Hair Extensions are Hard to Maintain Hair extensions save you from the stress of having to rush to your stylist every morning. If correctly installed, your hair extensions should not require professional care regularly. They are easy to take care of. For starters, patience is vital. Once you are well knowledgeable on how to apply and take care of them after installation, maintenance is a walk in the park! 4. Questionable Source of Human Hair Extensions For the longest time in history, people around the world have been donating their hair. Quality human hair extensions sold in reputable shops, Superior Hair included, are sourced from healthy regular people. What makes our extensions last is the fact that they aren't swept from the floors of temples and salons. Instead, they are sourced from donors with long, thick ponytails. 5. Hair Extensions Limit Your Workout Exercise Installing hair extensions does not mean you can't lead a healthy fit life. Taking precautions such as the use of correct products and tools should have you rocking your favourite style, even to the gym! If you are looking for a carefree option, then clip-ins will be your go-to. Not only are they unbelievably easy to install, but they also come in handy when you wish to sweat it out in the gym and not have to worry about how your hair looks. Long, healthy hair goals shouldn't be a farfetched dream anymore. Be sure to purchase your hair extensions from a trusted seller, and you can be assured of their quality. At Superior Hair, we strive to make your hair dreams a reality!

Why are my extensions tangling and matting, and what can I do?

Why are my extensions tangling and matting, and what can I do?

Getting down to the root cause. Don’t you hate it when your hair extensions matt and tangle? Even though hair extensions are a beautiful hair solution, sometimes they can tangle and you don’t even know what’s causing it.  The most common causes your extensions tangle   1) Not taking good care of your hair extensions. Hair quality of the extensions is important. At Superiorhair, we vow to provide you with the highest tier hair extensions guaranteed. We assure you that you won’t have to worry about those low-quality hair extensions that have been overly processed that would tangle immediately to the exposure of water or poor weather conditions.   2) Low-quality hair products. Hair products can take a toll on your hair extensions. The use of proper hair products makes a huge difference in whether your hair will tangle and matt up or remain soft and manageable. Find out what products work best by doing your own personal thorough research or feel free to ask the crew at Superior Hair. We can’t stress it enough, it’s highly recommended that you don’t risk the condition of your hair for low-quality products.   OTHER CAUSES INCLUDE    3) Hair length. Super long hair is prone to tangling so it’s advisable to trim it in layers. 4) Dryness. Dry hair becomes brittle and can easily tangle up.   Now that you know the common causes of tangling and matting, let's find out how you can prevent them. How to prevent tangling and matting? 1) Regular brushing   It’s that simple! Regularly brushing your hair significantly reduces the chances of your hair tangling down the road. Always start from the ends and work towards the roots, and we advise you to do so when your hair is wet. If you opt to brush your hair when wet, be sure to use a wide-tooth comb. Tangling and knotting tend to happen mostly at the ends when hair is not brushed for days.    2) Use Sulphate-free hair products. We urge you to steer clear of hair products that contain sulphate. Using products containing sulphates can strip your extensions of their natural moisture, leaving them weak and looking dry. After shampooing, apply an appropriate moisturising hair product that would leave your extensions well hydrated. 3) Secure your hair at night Not tying up your hair can cause your extensions to rub against your pillow throughout the night. As a result, friction is created which leads you to wake up with tangled hair. If you’d rather not tie up your hair, it’s advisable to sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. Protect your hair extensions and prevent tangling at all costs!  4) Detangle, Detangle. We cannot emphasize this enough. Also, please note that detangling is very different from brushing. This is what we mean: -  Brushing is a preventative measure whereas -  Detangling is a recovery measure If your hair extensions tangle up, it is important to take your time to detangle them while they’re wet. You can also use your fingers so that there’s less tension and pulling on the strands. Ensure the detangling is done thoroughly!   It’s up to you now! Preventing tangling and matting is not rocket science. All it takes is attention, proper care, and patience. Using proper products and tools go a long way. We hope this blog will help you to prevent tangling, matting, and shedding. Superior Hair hopes that you are now well equipped to handle tangling when it occurs. All the best on your glamourous looks!

The longevity of hair extensions: How long do they usually last?

The longevity of hair extensions: How long do they usually last?

Hair extensions have become a popular choice for individuals looking to add length and volume to their natural hair. One common question that arises is how long hair extensions usually last. In this blog, we will address the average lifespan of hair extensions, factors that influence their durability, and tips for maximizing their longevity. Average Lifespan: The lifespan of hair extensions can vary depending on several factors, including the type of extensions, the quality of the hair used, and the individual's care routine. On average, high-quality human hair extensions can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. However, it's important to note that this is an average, and the actual duration may vary based on individual circumstances. Factors Influencing Durability a. Quality of Hair Opting for high-quality hair extensions, such as those made from 100% Remy human hair, can significantly impact their durability. Remy hair is known for its cuticle alignment and natural appearance, making it less prone to tangling and shedding. b. Installation Technique Proper installation by a professional stylist is crucial for the longevity of hair extensions. Skillful application ensures that the extensions are securely attached, reducing the risk of premature damage or slippage. c. Maintenance Routine How well extensions are maintained plays a vital role in their lifespan. Regular brushing with a gentle brush, using recommended hair care products, and avoiding excessive heat styling or chemical treatments can help preserve the extensions. Frequency of Maintenance: The need for maintenance of hair extensions depends on their type and the rate of natural hair growth. Semi-permanent extensions, such as tape-ins, nano beaded and sew-in weft extensions usually require adjustment every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain a seamless blend with the natural hair as it grows. Clip-in extensions can be removed and reinstalled as desired, making them a flexible option for temporary wear. Everyday Wear Hair extensions are designed to be worn daily, provided they are properly installed and maintained. However, it's important to give your hair and extensions regular breaks by removing them before sleeping or not participating in activities that may cause excessive strain on the hair. Allowing your natural hair and scalp to breathe overnight can contribute to the overall health and longevity of your extensions. Extension Longevity Certain types of extensions tend to have a longer lifespan compared to others. As mentioned earlier, high-quality human hair extensions, particularly those made from Remy hair, such as Superior Hair Extensions, are known for their durability and can last up to a year or longer with proper care. Synthetic hair extensions, while more affordable, typically have a shorter lifespan, ranging from a few months to half a year. By investing in high-quality extensions, following proper care guidelines, and staying mindful of maintenance intervals, you can ensure that your hair extensions last longer and maintain their beautiful appearance. Remember, consulting with a professional stylist and using recommended products are key to maximizing the longevity of your extensions.

Where Does Our Human Hair Come From?

Where Does Our Human Hair Come From?

To achieve the most realistic look possible, human hair is the key, with the extensions seamlessly blending in with your natural hair. Many are reluctant when it comes to human hair, often feeling uncomfortable about not knowing where it’s come from. When you shop hair extensions with us, you can be confident in the quality and ethical sourcing of your hair. Below, we discuss where our human hair comes from and how it’s sourced.  Why is Human Hair Preferred Over Synthetic?  Human hair is the most popular choice when it comes to extensions and wigs, due to the realistic results they deliver. These results are more than the look and feel of the extensions, as you have far more freedom when it comes to styling. Heat tools can be used with care to style your long and luscious locks, without damaging the extensions. Where Do Real Human Hair Extensions Come From?  We work hard to maintain a healthy relationship with our hair suppliers and ensure they are paid fairly, and all hair is obtained ethically. Hair extensions have become more popular globally, but where do real human hair extensions come from, and how does the industry keep up with the demand? By putting our relationship with suppliers at the forefront of our business, we can ensure that they’re receiving enough money to provide them with a source of income and living wages. All our hair is sourced ethically, and we are devoted to adhering to the strict industry guidelines for hair production to keep things fair and ethical on every level of our supply chain. We do not condone the use of underage workers, underpaid workers, or unethically sourced hair that has become prevalent in the industry. The Importance of Ethical Sourcing The world is paying more attention to where their hair comes from as some of the darker aspects of the hair trade come to light. The Guardian explains that hair is generally sourced from impoverished areas, where women are offered small payments for their hair. It’s emphasised that this is not something these women are excited to participate in, usually being a last-resort option to ease their financial strain. Many women in these areas have virgin hair—never dyed, touched by heat tools, and in some cases cut at all—making it a valuable commodity on the dark side of the hair trade. There are reports of children being manipulated into shaving their heads, and even “prison hair” is rumoured to be on the market. Fortunately, as more light is shed on the issue, more effort is being put into change. We pride ourselves on our relationship with our suppliers, who all source their hair from willing donors across the world. With global standards adapting and the unethical sourcing of hair put under the microscope, we get closer to seeing a change for the better across the industry.
