Sew-In vs Tape-In Extensions: Which Install Suits Your Client?

Quick answer

Tape-in extensions suit clients with fine to medium hair who want a flat, quick install and gentle removal, with move-ups every 8 to 10 weeks. Sew-in extensions, stitched to a braid or beaded row, suit medium, thick, or textured hair that can carry a weft row and wants big volume from fewer packs.

Your client sits down, shows you a photo, and asks for "extensions." Whether that turns into a sew-in or a tape-in decides how long she spends in your chair, how her scalp feels in week six, and whether she rebooks. This guide breaks down sew in vs tape in extensions from the stylist's side of the chair: how each install works, which hair types each one suits, and the questions that settle the choice in a consultation.

What Is the Difference Between Sew-In and Tape-In Extensions?

Both are semi-permanent, stylist-installed methods. The real difference is how each one grips the natural hair, which drives weight distribution, chair time, and comfort.

Tape-ins are short, pre-taped wefts applied as a "sandwich," with a thin slice of natural hair pressed between two adhesive pieces. Our Ultra Seamless tape-in extensions have a 4 cm wide tab and come 10 wefts (5 sandwiches) per pack, from 22g at 14 inches up to 35g at 26 inches. Because each piece is small, the weight of a full head is spread across dozens of attachment points.

Sew-ins use a long, continuous weft stitched to a foundation. In US salons that foundation is usually one of two things:

  • Braid-down sew-in: the natural hair is cornrowed flat and the weft is sewn onto the braids with a curved needle and thread. This is the traditional weave, common on textured and coily hair.
  • Beaded row sew-in: a row of micro beads is clamped onto small sections, and the weft is stitched along that bead track. No braids, so it suits straighter textures.

Superior's machine weft extensions come as a 50g, 20 inch weft and are made for exactly this work. In short: tape spreads weight out, sew-ins concentrate it along a few rows. Neither is "better." They solve different problems.

How Each Install Works in the Chair

Tape-in application

Start with clarified, conditioner-free, fully dry hair, since root residue is the usual reason tabs slip. Take a slice thin enough to see through, place the first weft about a quarter inch from the scalp, lay the hair over it, and press the partner tab on top. Work in a staggered brick pattern so tabs don't line up into a visible ridge, and keep clear of the hairline and the client's usual part. A full head usually takes well under two hours once you have a rhythm.

Slice thickness is the skill. Too thick and the adhesive can't grip every strand, so the tab slides. Too thin and the weight sits on too few hairs, which is where traction stress starts. If you want a refresher on placement and blending, our complete guide to seamless tape-in extensions walks through it.

Sew-in application

For a braid-down, you cornrow the hair horizontally (or in a pattern that suits the final part), leave out enough natural hair at the perimeter and part to blend, then sew the weft to the braids. For a beaded row, you section a clean horizontal line, clamp beads at even spacing, lay the weft along the track, and stitch it to the beads. Many stylists stack two wefts on one row when the client wants serious density.

Superior estimates a professional weft install at around 2 to 3 hours, so book the time accordingly.

Sew In vs Tape In Extensions Side by Side

The numbers to have in your head during a consultation, taken from Superior's product specs.

Factor Tape-in Sew-in (weft)
Attachment Adhesive sandwich, many small points Thread on braids or a beaded row
Packs for a full head 4 to 6 2 to 3
Move-up interval 8 to 10 weeks 6 to 8 weeks
Reuse Up to four applications Machine weft up to three; Genius weft up to four
Install time Shorter About 2 to 3 hours
Best hair types Thin to thick, strongest on fine to medium Medium to thick, coarse, textured; Genius weft for thin to medium
Main risk Slipping from oils or residue Tension along the row, matting if worn past interval

Matching the Method to Your Client's Hair Type

Hair type makes the first cut. Feel the hair, check density at the crown and temples, and look at the scalp. Medium hair can go either way, so lifestyle decides it.

Fine or thin hair

Tape-ins are usually the first choice. The tabs lie flat, and weight is shared across many small sections, so no single row drags. If the client is set on a weft look, Genius weft extensions are the exception worth knowing: Superior rates them for thin to medium hair because the track is far finer than a machine weft. A traditional machine weft on fine hair tends to show and to pull.

Thick or coarse hair

Sew-ins earn their place here. Dense hair hides a row easily, and two or three wefts add serious volume. Tape works too, but you will place a lot of sandwiches to make a visible difference.

Textured and coily hair

A braid-down sew-in is the long-standing choice. Tape-ins can work too, but adhesive needs product-free roots, which clashes with oil-based routines. Superior's afro-textured range includes both textured tape-ins and wefts, so you can match curl pattern either way.

When to say "not yet"

Oily scalps tend to lift tape, and adhesive-sensitive clients need a patch test or a sew-in. If a client has sudden or patchy shedding, hold off on any install and suggest she see her doctor first.

Lifestyle, Maintenance, and Aftercare

Tape-in clients need to keep oils, masks, and conditioner off the tabs, wash with a sulfate-free shampoo, and brush from the ends up while holding at the root. Daily gym sessions, heavy sweating, and regular pool time all wear on adhesive faster. Heat styling is fine on the lengths (keep tools below about 350°F), but keep the flat iron off the tabs themselves, since heat softens the bond.

Sew-in clients should wait 48 to 72 hours before the first wash, then wash 2 to 3 times a week. Braid-down clients need to cleanse the scalp between the braids and dry everything completely, because damp braids under a weft can start to smell. Beaded row clients should check that beads aren't sliding and that shed hair isn't knotting around the row.

Styling flexibility depends more on placement than method. High ponytails and tight updos are where tabs or tracks peek through, so ask how she wears her hair on a normal week.

Tension, Damage Risk, and Removal

Installed well and maintained on time, neither method damages hair. Problems come from misplaced tension, overdue appointments, and rough removal.

With tape-ins, tension is low and spread out. Trouble starts with too-thin slices, picked tabs, or oils that loosen the adhesive. Removal is gentle: apply adhesive remover, let it work, and slide the sandwich apart. The hair is cleaned, re-taped with fresh pre-cut tape tabs, and reinstalled at the root.

With sew-ins, tension is concentrated along each row. Braids pulled tight at the hairline are the classic cause of traction stress, and beads clamped on too large or too small a section can strain or slip. Removal means cutting the thread, opening beads or taking down braids, then detangling. Some shed hair trapped under the weft will come out, which is normal, but it is why a sew-in should never run weeks past its move-up date. Outgrown roots tangle and mat.

Cuticle-aligned Remy hair resists tangling at the root, which matters most on wefts where a lot of hair sits in one line. Our explainer on Genius weft extensions covers how a weft that can be cut anywhere on the seam without unraveling lets you fit rows to each head shape.

Chair Time and Cost Over the Life of a Set

Clients compare the first invoice. Compare the year instead.

  • Product: a tape-in full head uses 4 to 6 packs; a weft full head uses 2 to 3. Wefts carry more hair per pack, so the gram count can be similar even with fewer packs.
  • Lifespan: Superior tape-ins are reusable for up to four applications, Genius wefts up to four, and machine wefts up to three. Superior quotes up to a year of wear from wefts with good care.
  • Appointments: tape-ins need a move-up every 8 to 10 weeks; wefts every 6 to 8. Over a year, that is roughly one extra maintenance visit for a sew-in client.
  • Chair time: the sew-in install itself runs about 2 to 3 hours, so price it by time, not just by product.

Walk the client through the year, not just today's price, so she books knowing what upkeep looks like.

Which Install Should You Recommend? A Consultation Checklist

Run through these before you commit, and note the answers on the client card.

  1. Density and texture: fine and thin leans tape-in or Genius weft; thick, coarse, or coily leans sew-in.
  2. Scalp: oily or adhesive-sensitive leans sew-in; sensitive to tension at the hairline leans tape-in.
  3. Lifestyle: daily workouts and swimming are harder on tape; clients who won't commit to a 6 to 8 week cycle are a risk for wefts.
  4. Styling habits: high ponytails and center parts change where you can place anything.
  5. Extension history: ask what she wore before and how it came out. Previous breakage at a row tells you a lot.
  6. Color: match at the mid-lengths and check the root against her regrowth, using our color rings and swatches. Rooted and balayage shades blend more easily if she is between salon color appointments.

When the answers split, start with the gentler option for her hair type and reassess at the first move-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are sew-in or tape-in extensions better for thin hair?

Tape-in extensions are usually better for thin hair because the flat tabs spread weight across many small sections instead of one continuous row. If a client with thin to medium hair prefers a weft, a Genius weft on a beaded row is the gentler sew-in option, since its track is much finer than a traditional machine weft.

How long do sew-in vs tape-in extensions last?

Superior tape-in extensions need repositioning every 8 to 10 weeks, while sew-in wefts need a move-up every 6 to 8 weeks. The hair itself lasts much longer. Tape-ins can be reapplied up to four times, and wefts can give up to a year of wear when cared for well.

Can you reuse tape-in and sew-in extensions?

Yes, both are reusable when they are removed carefully and kept in good condition. Superior tape-ins are reusable for up to four applications with fresh tape tabs each time. Genius wefts can be reused up to four times and machine wefts up to three times, re-sewn or re-beaded at each move-up.

Which is more damaging, sew-in or tape-in extensions?

Neither causes damage when installed correctly and maintained on schedule. Tape-ins carry lower, more spread-out tension. Sew-ins concentrate tension along each row, so tight braids or overdue move-ups carry more risk of traction stress and matting. The bigger factors are installer skill, correct section size, and the client keeping her maintenance appointments.

How many packs do you need for a full head?

For a standard full head, Superior recommends 4 to 6 packs of tape-in extensions or 2 to 3 packs of wefts. Wefts hold more hair per pack, which is why fewer are needed. Adjust up for very thick hair or longer lengths, and down if the client only wants subtle volume rather than added length.

Can clients install tape-in or sew-in extensions at home?

No. Both are professional methods that need a trained stylist for sectioning, placement, tension control, and safe removal. A poorly placed tape slice or an overly tight braid can strain the natural hair. Clients who want an at-home option are better suited to clip-in or halo extensions they can put in and take out themselves.

Personalized Hair Care Routine for Extensions: Tailored Tips for Every Hair Type

Personalized Hair Care Routine for Extensions: Tailored Tips for Every Hair Type

Caring for hair extensions is crucial to making sure they look and feel natural, while maintaining their longevity. A personalized hair care routine not only keeps your extensions in prime condition but also supports the health of your natural hair. Here’s how to create a routine that’s perfect for you and your extensions: 1. Choose Extension-Safe Products Selecting the right products is key to maintaining your extensions. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and hydrating conditioners that preserve moisture without causing buildup. These gentle products help to keep both your extensions and natural hair hydrated and healthy. Sulfate-free shampoos prevent dryness and reduce tangling. Lightweight conditioners add moisture without weighing down your hair or making extensions greasy. 2. Cleanse Extensions Properly Washing your extensions regularly is essential, but the frequency depends on the type of extensions you have: Clip-ins: Wash them every 15-20 uses, focusing on product buildup. Sew-ins or tape-ins: Cleanse along with your natural hair every 7-10 days to avoid scalp buildup. Use lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing to prevent tangling or damaging the bonds of your extensions. 3. Detangle with Care Extensions, like natural hair, can easily become tangled, especially when not detangled regularly. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for extensions and always start from the ends, working your way up to minimize breakage. Apply a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to make the process smoother and protect your extensions. 4. Limit Heat Styling Heat styling can shorten the lifespan of your extensions, so it's important to protect them: Always apply a heat protectant spray before using hot tools, and try to use lower heat settings whenever possible. Air-dry your extensions to minimize heat exposure and prevent damage. 5. Regular Maintenance and Trims Maintaining your extensions through regular salon appointments ensures they remain secure and look fresh. Whether you have tape-ins, sew-ins, or other semi-permanent extensions, scheduling a trim every few weeks helps prevent split ends and keeps both your natural hair and extensions in top shape.By following these tips, you can create a personalized hair care routine that keeps your extensions healthy, long-lasting, and beautiful. Consistency is key—your extensions will look and feel their best when they’re cared for properly.

Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Bridal Hairstyle

Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Bridal Hairstyle

Planning your dream wedding is an exciting journey, and one of the most important aspects of your big day is your bridal hairstyle. With so many styles to choose from, finding the perfect look that compliments your dress and personal style can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry! We’re here to guide you through the process, so that you shine on your special day. 1. Consider Your Dress Style  Photo: Shutterstock The first step in choosing your bridal hairstyle is to consider the style of your wedding dress. If you're wearing a classic ball gown, elegant updos or soft curls can create a timeless look. For a bohemian-style dress, loose waves adorned with floral accessories may be the perfect match. Take some time to visualize how different hairstyles will look with your gown, as this will help narrow down your options. 2. Think About Your Wedding Theme Photo: Pinterest Your wedding theme plays a significant role in your hairstyle choice. A beach wedding may call for a relaxed, beachy look, while a formal ceremony may require a more polished style. Incorporate elements of your theme into your hairstyle for a cohesive look. For example, if you're having a vintage-themed wedding, consider retro hairstyles like finger waves or a classic chignon. 3. Factor in Your Hair Type Photo: hadviser.com Your natural hair type can greatly influence your hairstyle choices. If you have fine hair, you may want to consider hairstyles that add volume, such as soft curls or textured updos. Conversely, if you have thick hair, you can experiment with more intricate styles, like braids or twisted updos. If you’re looking to enhance your hair’s length or volume, hair extensions can be a fantastic solution. They provide the perfect way to achieve the length and fullness you desire without the commitment. 4. Explore Different Styles When it comes to bridal hairstyles, the options are nearly endless. Here are some stunning hairstyle ideas you might love: Loose Waves: Perfect for a laid-back or beach wedding, loose waves give a soft and romantic feel. Pair them with floral accessories for a boho look. Photo: janeinthewoods.com Updos: Timeless and elegant, updos can range from sleek and polished to soft and romantic. Updos fit well with both elegant and relaxed wedding settings. Photo: rockmywedding.co.uk Braids: Whether you choose a classic braid, fishtail, or crown braid, this style adds a touch of whimsy to your look. Photo: Pinterest Half-Up, Half-Down: This versatile style combines the elegance of an updo with the beauty of flowing hair, making it suitable for various wedding themes. Photo: people.com 5. Try Out Hair Extensions Photo: stylemepretty.com If you're dreaming of a specific hairstyle but your natural hair doesn’t quite fit the bill, hair extensions can be your best friend. Whether you want to add length, volume, or both, extensions allow you to achieve the perfect look without waiting for your hair to grow. Clip-in extensions are a popular choice for brides since they’re easy to apply and remove, giving you flexibility on your big day. 6. Schedule a Trial Run Photo: Ashley Smith/Instagram Once you've narrowed down your hairstyle options, it's essential to schedule a trial run with your hairstylist. This will give you the opportunity to see how your chosen hairstyle looks with your dress and make any necessary adjustments. Bring any hair accessories you plan to wear, and don't hesitate to ask for their professional opinion on what styles will work best for you. 7. Keep Comfort in Mind Photo: annasposagroup.com On your big day, you’ll want to exude comfort and confidence. Ensure that your hairstyle feels secure and that you can move freely. Avoid styles that might cause tension or discomfort, especially if you plan to wear your hair down for the reception. Hair extensions can also help distribute weight evenly, allowing for a comfortable fit while adding beautiful volume or length. Choosing the perfect bridal hairstyle is an important part of your wedding planning process. By considering your dress style, wedding theme, hair type, and personal preferences, you can find a look that enhances your beauty on your special day. And remember, hair extensions can be a wonderful way to achieve your dream hairstyle, offering versatility and a flawless finish. Take your time, experiment, and enjoy this beautiful journey toward your wedding day!

Seasonal Hair Extension Maintenance: How to Keep Your Hair Gorgeous All Year

Seasonal Hair Extension Maintenance: How to Keep Your Hair Gorgeous All Year

Hair extensions are a game-changer for anyone looking to add volume, length, or a little extra glam to their look. But, just like natural hair, they need a little TLC—especially when the seasons change. The weather can have a major impact on your extensions, from the dry, chilly air in winter to the blazing heat of summer. With a few simple adjustments to your hair care routine, you can keep your extensions looking fabulous all year round. Let’s look into how to give your extensions the love they need through each season! Spring: Time for a Refresh Spring is all about renewal, and it’s the perfect season to give your hair extensions a fresh start. As the weather warms up, humidity levels increase, and you might notice more frizz or tangles in your extensions. Tips for spring hair extension care: Clarifying treatment: After a long winter of heavy styling products, your extensions may need a little detox. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup but be cautious not to overdo it since extensions can dry out quickly. Lightweight products: With humidity rising, switch to lightweight serums and leave-in conditioners. Heavy creams can weigh your extensions down and leave them looking greasy.   Brush gently: Since spring can be windy, make sure you gently brush your hair extensions to prevent tangling. Use a soft-bristle brush and always start from the ends, working your way up. Summer: Beat the Heat (and Frizz) Summer can be the trickiest season for hair extensions. Between the heat, sun, saltwater, and chlorine, your hair extensions are exposed to a lot of potential damage. But no worries, with the right routine, your extensions can stay sleek and beautiful throughout the summer months. Summer hair extension care tips: UV protection: The sun’s rays can dry out your hair extensions and cause fading. Look for hair care products with UV protection, or wear a chic hat or scarf when you’re out in the sun. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: The summer heat can zap moisture from your extensions. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed for extensions, and consider a weekly deep conditioning treatment to keep your hair silky and soft. Pool and beach protection: Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on extensions, making them brittle and prone to tangling. Before jumping in, dampen your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner to create a barrier. If you’re swimming often, consider wearing a swim cap or tying your hair up in a loose bun to minimize exposure. Fall: Prepare for Cooler Days As fall rolls in, the air starts to dry out, which can lead to brittle hair extensions. This is the season to start preparing for the cooler months ahead by boosting moisture and minimizing heat styling. Fall hair extension care tips: Switch to a richer conditioner: Now’s the time to swap out your lightweight summer products for richer, creamier conditioners that can provide extra moisture. Minimize heat styling: With the weather cooling down, it's tempting to pull out the blow dryer or curling iron more often. Try to limit heat styling, or use a heat protectant spray if you can’t resist those gorgeous waves. Combat frizz: The windy fall air can cause frizz in both natural hair and extensions. Keep frizz at bay with anti-frizz serums and by avoiding over washing, which can strip your hair of its natural oils. Winter: Fight the Chill and Dryness Winter brings its own set of challenges—cold air, indoor heating, and static can all wreak havoc on your extensions. Keeping them moisturized and protected from the elements is the key to getting through the season with healthy, gorgeous hair. Winter hair extension care tips: Deep conditioning treatments: Winter dryness can cause extensions to look dull and lifeless. Deep conditioning treatments, done once or twice a week, will help lock in moisture and keep your extensions soft and manageable. Static control: Indoor heating can cause static, making your extensions more difficult to style. Use a leave-in conditioner or anti-static spray to keep your hair smooth and frizz-free. Cover up: Winter hats and scarves are your best friends during this season! They not only keep you warm but also protect your hair extensions from the cold, dry air. Just be careful to choose soft, non-abrasive fabrics to avoid friction that can cause tangling or breakage. Year-Round Care No matter the season, some hair extension care tips are universal: Brush regularly: Use a gentle, soft-bristle brush to keep your extensions tangle-free. Be extra gentle at the roots to avoid loosening bonds or clips. Avoid over washing: Hair extensions don’t produce natural oils like your scalp, so over washing can lead to dryness. If you can avoid it, do not wash your hair more than twice a week. Heat protection is key: Whether you’re blow-drying, curling, or straightening your extensions, always use a heat protectant spray to shield them from damage. With these seasonal hair extension care tips, you’ll keep your hair looking fabulous and feeling healthy all year long. Just a few small changes to your routine can make a huge difference in how your extensions hold up to the elements—whether you’re braving the summer sun or the winter chill!

It’s a subtle way to introduce warmer tones to your hair, adding depth and dimension that’s perfect for the season.  Photo: ROMEU FELIPE/Instagram 2. Loose Waves and Curls Loose, beachy waves may be synonymous with summer, but softer waves and curls are just as stylish for fall. The relaxed texture pairs perfectly with cozy fall sweaters and scarves, giving you an effortless yet chic look. If you’re using clip-in or tape-in hair extensions, creating waves is a breeze. Simply curl your natural hair and the extensions together with a curling iron or wand for a seamless blend. For a more natural, undone look, brush through the curls with your fingers after curling to loosen them up. Photo: ROBERT LEVI/Instagram 3. Low Ponytails Ponytails are a go-to hairstyle for their simplicity and versatility, and they’re especially trendy this fall. A sleek, low ponytail paired with hair extensions gives you that extra length and volume for an elevated look. To achieve a flawless low ponytail, gather your natural hair and hair extensions at the nape of your neck, securing it with a hair tie. For a polished finish, take a small section of hair and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to conceal the hair tie. Want to add a fall twist? Tie a velvet scrunchie or a silk scarf around your ponytail for a touch of autumn-inspired elegance. It’s a simple way to take a classic hairstyle and make it fall-ready. Photo: Pinterest 4. Braids with Hair Extensions Braids never go out of style, but they’re especially popular during the fall when you can rock cozy, layered outfits with intricate hairstyles. Hair extensions make it easy to create fuller, more voluminous braids that are perfect for this season. One trendy option is the side-swept braid. To achieve this look, gather your hair and extensions to one side and braid it loosely for a soft, romantic effect. You can even incorporate some of those warm autumn colors by using balayage hair extensions or adding in a few temporary highlights. Photo: Amanda Diedrich/Instagram 5. Messy Buns and Top Knots Fall is all about cozy, comfortable vibes, and nothing says effortless chic like a messy bun or top knot. Hair extensions can make these styles look fuller and more voluminous, perfect for those days when you want a stylish yet easy look. To create a voluminous messy bun, gather your hair and extensions into a loose ponytail, twist it around the base, and secure it with bobby pins. Pull out a few strands in the front for that effortlessly undone look. For a top knot, simply gather your hair into a high ponytail, wrap it around itself, and secure it with pins. Extensions will give you that full, thick look, making your top knot look more polished even when it’s styled to be messy. Photo: Pinterest 6. Layered Looks Layering isn’t just for your wardrobe this fall—it’s a major trend for hair too. If you want to create dimension and movement, consider adding layers to your hair extensions. Layered extensions can give your hair a softer, more natural look while adding volume and length. Whether you’re styling your hair down, in waves, or in a braid, layers add texture and interest, making your hairstyle look more dynamic and effortless. The History of Hair Extensions: From Cleopatra to Today

The History of Hair Extensions: From Cleopatra to Today

Hair extensions have a rich and fascinating history that spans cultures, continents, and centuries. From royalty to modern-day celebrities, the desire for longer, fuller hair has always been a symbol of beauty and status. Let’s take a fun journey through time to see how hair extensions evolved, from ancient Egypt to the red carpets of Hollywood. Ancient Egypt: The Origin of Hair Extensions Hair extensions can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt, where both men and women used wigs and hairpieces to enhance their look. Cleopatra, one of the most famous historical figures, was known for wearing elaborate braided wigs made from human hair, wool, or palm fibers. Egyptians also dyed their extensions black or blue using plant-based dyes to match their natural hair or make a bold statement. Extensions were more than just a fashion accessory—they also symbolized power, status, and even divine protection. Photo: Universal Images Group Editoria/Getty Images The Roman Empire: Hair as a Status Symbol During the Roman Empire, wealthy women adorned their hair with intricate styles using extensions made from human hair or animal fur. Blonde hair extensions were especially popular, as blondes were often viewed as exotic. Roman women would often import blonde hair from the Germanic tribes and wear them to achieve this coveted look. The use of hair extensions among the elite signified wealth and social standing. Photo: Pinterest 17th-18th Century Europe: Wigs Galore Hair extensions in the form of wigs became a significant part of European fashion during the 17th and 18th centuries. Royals like King Louis XIV of France and Queen Elizabeth I were known for wearing large, elaborate wigs, which later became popular among aristocrats. These wigs were often powdered and styled to convey authority, fashion, and status. By the late 18th century, wigs had become smaller and more refined, but their role in enhancing appearances persisted. Human hair was often used to create intricate hairstyles, but there was also a more sentimental use of hair during this time. People would weave the hair of deceased loved ones into mourning jewelry or keepsakes. This practice highlighted the belief in the beauty and symbolic power of hair. Photo: Pinterest 20th Century Hollywood: Hair Extensions on the Big Screen With the advent of Hollywood glamour in the 20th century, hair extensions found a new stage—literally. Stars like Marilyn Monroe and Rita Hayworth popularized voluminous and glamorous hairstyles that often relied on hairpieces and extensions. During this period, hair extensions were predominantly reserved for celebrities, as they were expensive and difficult to access for the average person. Photo: fanpop.com The 1980s: Hair Extensions Go Mainstream The 1980s marked a turning point for hair extensions, as they became more accessible to the general public. The development of clip-in and tape-in extensions made it easier for people to achieve longer, fuller hair without the need for permanent bonding or intricate sewing. Pop icons like Madonna and Cher helped popularize the trend, with big, bold hair becoming a defining feature of the decade. Whether you’re looking for a quick change with clip-ins or a long-term transformation with sew-ins, there are countless options to choose from.
