Sew-In vs Tape-In Extensions: Which Install Suits Your Client?

Quick answer

Tape-in extensions suit clients with fine to medium hair who want a flat, quick install and gentle removal, with move-ups every 8 to 10 weeks. Sew-in extensions, stitched to a braid or beaded row, suit medium, thick, or textured hair that can carry a weft row and wants big volume from fewer packs.

Your client sits down, shows you a photo, and asks for "extensions." Whether that turns into a sew-in or a tape-in decides how long she spends in your chair, how her scalp feels in week six, and whether she rebooks. This guide breaks down sew in vs tape in extensions from the stylist's side of the chair: how each install works, which hair types each one suits, and the questions that settle the choice in a consultation.

What Is the Difference Between Sew-In and Tape-In Extensions?

Both are semi-permanent, stylist-installed methods. The real difference is how each one grips the natural hair, which drives weight distribution, chair time, and comfort.

Tape-ins are short, pre-taped wefts applied as a "sandwich," with a thin slice of natural hair pressed between two adhesive pieces. Our Ultra Seamless tape-in extensions have a 4 cm wide tab and come 10 wefts (5 sandwiches) per pack, from 22g at 14 inches up to 35g at 26 inches. Because each piece is small, the weight of a full head is spread across dozens of attachment points.

Sew-ins use a long, continuous weft stitched to a foundation. In US salons that foundation is usually one of two things:

  • Braid-down sew-in: the natural hair is cornrowed flat and the weft is sewn onto the braids with a curved needle and thread. This is the traditional weave, common on textured and coily hair.
  • Beaded row sew-in: a row of micro beads is clamped onto small sections, and the weft is stitched along that bead track. No braids, so it suits straighter textures.

Superior's machine weft extensions come as a 50g, 20 inch weft and are made for exactly this work. In short: tape spreads weight out, sew-ins concentrate it along a few rows. Neither is "better." They solve different problems.

How Each Install Works in the Chair

Tape-in application

Start with clarified, conditioner-free, fully dry hair, since root residue is the usual reason tabs slip. Take a slice thin enough to see through, place the first weft about a quarter inch from the scalp, lay the hair over it, and press the partner tab on top. Work in a staggered brick pattern so tabs don't line up into a visible ridge, and keep clear of the hairline and the client's usual part. A full head usually takes well under two hours once you have a rhythm.

Slice thickness is the skill. Too thick and the adhesive can't grip every strand, so the tab slides. Too thin and the weight sits on too few hairs, which is where traction stress starts. If you want a refresher on placement and blending, our complete guide to seamless tape-in extensions walks through it.

Sew-in application

For a braid-down, you cornrow the hair horizontally (or in a pattern that suits the final part), leave out enough natural hair at the perimeter and part to blend, then sew the weft to the braids. For a beaded row, you section a clean horizontal line, clamp beads at even spacing, lay the weft along the track, and stitch it to the beads. Many stylists stack two wefts on one row when the client wants serious density.

Superior estimates a professional weft install at around 2 to 3 hours, so book the time accordingly.

Sew In vs Tape In Extensions Side by Side

The numbers to have in your head during a consultation, taken from Superior's product specs.

Factor Tape-in Sew-in (weft)
Attachment Adhesive sandwich, many small points Thread on braids or a beaded row
Packs for a full head 4 to 6 2 to 3
Move-up interval 8 to 10 weeks 6 to 8 weeks
Reuse Up to four applications Machine weft up to three; Genius weft up to four
Install time Shorter About 2 to 3 hours
Best hair types Thin to thick, strongest on fine to medium Medium to thick, coarse, textured; Genius weft for thin to medium
Main risk Slipping from oils or residue Tension along the row, matting if worn past interval

Matching the Method to Your Client's Hair Type

Hair type makes the first cut. Feel the hair, check density at the crown and temples, and look at the scalp. Medium hair can go either way, so lifestyle decides it.

Fine or thin hair

Tape-ins are usually the first choice. The tabs lie flat, and weight is shared across many small sections, so no single row drags. If the client is set on a weft look, Genius weft extensions are the exception worth knowing: Superior rates them for thin to medium hair because the track is far finer than a machine weft. A traditional machine weft on fine hair tends to show and to pull.

Thick or coarse hair

Sew-ins earn their place here. Dense hair hides a row easily, and two or three wefts add serious volume. Tape works too, but you will place a lot of sandwiches to make a visible difference.

Textured and coily hair

A braid-down sew-in is the long-standing choice. Tape-ins can work too, but adhesive needs product-free roots, which clashes with oil-based routines. Superior's afro-textured range includes both textured tape-ins and wefts, so you can match curl pattern either way.

When to say "not yet"

Oily scalps tend to lift tape, and adhesive-sensitive clients need a patch test or a sew-in. If a client has sudden or patchy shedding, hold off on any install and suggest she see her doctor first.

Lifestyle, Maintenance, and Aftercare

Tape-in clients need to keep oils, masks, and conditioner off the tabs, wash with a sulfate-free shampoo, and brush from the ends up while holding at the root. Daily gym sessions, heavy sweating, and regular pool time all wear on adhesive faster. Heat styling is fine on the lengths (keep tools below about 350°F), but keep the flat iron off the tabs themselves, since heat softens the bond.

Sew-in clients should wait 48 to 72 hours before the first wash, then wash 2 to 3 times a week. Braid-down clients need to cleanse the scalp between the braids and dry everything completely, because damp braids under a weft can start to smell. Beaded row clients should check that beads aren't sliding and that shed hair isn't knotting around the row.

Styling flexibility depends more on placement than method. High ponytails and tight updos are where tabs or tracks peek through, so ask how she wears her hair on a normal week.

Tension, Damage Risk, and Removal

Installed well and maintained on time, neither method damages hair. Problems come from misplaced tension, overdue appointments, and rough removal.

With tape-ins, tension is low and spread out. Trouble starts with too-thin slices, picked tabs, or oils that loosen the adhesive. Removal is gentle: apply adhesive remover, let it work, and slide the sandwich apart. The hair is cleaned, re-taped with fresh pre-cut tape tabs, and reinstalled at the root.

With sew-ins, tension is concentrated along each row. Braids pulled tight at the hairline are the classic cause of traction stress, and beads clamped on too large or too small a section can strain or slip. Removal means cutting the thread, opening beads or taking down braids, then detangling. Some shed hair trapped under the weft will come out, which is normal, but it is why a sew-in should never run weeks past its move-up date. Outgrown roots tangle and mat.

Cuticle-aligned Remy hair resists tangling at the root, which matters most on wefts where a lot of hair sits in one line. Our explainer on Genius weft extensions covers how a weft that can be cut anywhere on the seam without unraveling lets you fit rows to each head shape.

Chair Time and Cost Over the Life of a Set

Clients compare the first invoice. Compare the year instead.

  • Product: a tape-in full head uses 4 to 6 packs; a weft full head uses 2 to 3. Wefts carry more hair per pack, so the gram count can be similar even with fewer packs.
  • Lifespan: Superior tape-ins are reusable for up to four applications, Genius wefts up to four, and machine wefts up to three. Superior quotes up to a year of wear from wefts with good care.
  • Appointments: tape-ins need a move-up every 8 to 10 weeks; wefts every 6 to 8. Over a year, that is roughly one extra maintenance visit for a sew-in client.
  • Chair time: the sew-in install itself runs about 2 to 3 hours, so price it by time, not just by product.

Walk the client through the year, not just today's price, so she books knowing what upkeep looks like.

Which Install Should You Recommend? A Consultation Checklist

Run through these before you commit, and note the answers on the client card.

  1. Density and texture: fine and thin leans tape-in or Genius weft; thick, coarse, or coily leans sew-in.
  2. Scalp: oily or adhesive-sensitive leans sew-in; sensitive to tension at the hairline leans tape-in.
  3. Lifestyle: daily workouts and swimming are harder on tape; clients who won't commit to a 6 to 8 week cycle are a risk for wefts.
  4. Styling habits: high ponytails and center parts change where you can place anything.
  5. Extension history: ask what she wore before and how it came out. Previous breakage at a row tells you a lot.
  6. Color: match at the mid-lengths and check the root against her regrowth, using our color rings and swatches. Rooted and balayage shades blend more easily if she is between salon color appointments.

When the answers split, start with the gentler option for her hair type and reassess at the first move-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are sew-in or tape-in extensions better for thin hair?

Tape-in extensions are usually better for thin hair because the flat tabs spread weight across many small sections instead of one continuous row. If a client with thin to medium hair prefers a weft, a Genius weft on a beaded row is the gentler sew-in option, since its track is much finer than a traditional machine weft.

How long do sew-in vs tape-in extensions last?

Superior tape-in extensions need repositioning every 8 to 10 weeks, while sew-in wefts need a move-up every 6 to 8 weeks. The hair itself lasts much longer. Tape-ins can be reapplied up to four times, and wefts can give up to a year of wear when cared for well.

Can you reuse tape-in and sew-in extensions?

Yes, both are reusable when they are removed carefully and kept in good condition. Superior tape-ins are reusable for up to four applications with fresh tape tabs each time. Genius wefts can be reused up to four times and machine wefts up to three times, re-sewn or re-beaded at each move-up.

Which is more damaging, sew-in or tape-in extensions?

Neither causes damage when installed correctly and maintained on schedule. Tape-ins carry lower, more spread-out tension. Sew-ins concentrate tension along each row, so tight braids or overdue move-ups carry more risk of traction stress and matting. The bigger factors are installer skill, correct section size, and the client keeping her maintenance appointments.

How many packs do you need for a full head?

For a standard full head, Superior recommends 4 to 6 packs of tape-in extensions or 2 to 3 packs of wefts. Wefts hold more hair per pack, which is why fewer are needed. Adjust up for very thick hair or longer lengths, and down if the client only wants subtle volume rather than added length.

Can clients install tape-in or sew-in extensions at home?

No. Both are professional methods that need a trained stylist for sectioning, placement, tension control, and safe removal. A poorly placed tape slice or an overly tight braid can strain the natural hair. Clients who want an at-home option are better suited to clip-in or halo extensions they can put in and take out themselves.

Bulk Buying Without Compromise: How Superior Hair Factory Maintains Quality in Large-Scale Production

When it comes to purchasing hair extensions in bulk, the last thing salon owners or retailers want to worry about is a drop in quality. At Superior Hair, we understand that maintaining the highest level of excellence, even during large-scale production, is critical. That’s why we’ve developed a meticulous and well-refined process to make sure that every strand of hair meets our superior standards—whether you're ordering a few bundles or a massive shipment for wholesale. So, how do we make sure that quality is never compromised, even when handling large volumes? Let’s take a closer look at the methods we use to guarantee that every product that leaves our factory is top-tier, making us a trusted partner for salons and retailers around the world. 56 Stages of Perfection: Our Production Process At Superior Hair, maintaining quality starts with the process itself. Every product we produce undergoes a detailed, 56-stage production process. This isn't just about running hair through machines—each step is carefully managed to ensure that quality is consistent from start to finish. From sorting the hair by texture and length to washing and conditioning it, each phase plays a crucial role in shaping the final product. What’s key in this process is the attention to detail. Our team meticulously inspects the hair at every stage, making sure it meets our strict standards for texture, strength, and appearance. With 56 separate stages, there are multiple checkpoints to catch any inconsistencies before they make their way into the final product. This ensures that every extension, whether it's part of a small or large order, is flawless. Advanced Machinery and Technology While many might think hair extensions are a purely manual process, Superior Hair integrates advanced machinery to ensure consistency across large-scale orders. Our cutting-edge equipment helps sort and process hair with incredible precision, allowing us to manage bulk orders without sacrificing the quality our customers expect. But technology alone isn’t enough. We combine these machines with the expertise of our skilled team members who oversee every step, providing a perfect balance between automated precision and human attention to detail. This ensures that our products are crafted to the highest standards, even in high-volume production. Internal and External Quality Inspections Maintaining the Superior Hair standard of excellence requires a multi-layered approach to quality control. We have two dedicated teams responsible for making sure that every batch of hair meets our benchmarks—our internal inspection team and an external audit department. The internal inspection team works throughout the production process, checking everything from the raw material selection to the final stages of production. They ensure that every product adheres to our strict guidelines for texture, strength, and appearance. But we don’t stop there. Our external audit department then steps in for an additional layer of review. This department is solely responsible for ensuring that Superior Hair's products live up to our promise of top-tier quality. This double-layered inspection process is what sets us apart from competitors. By having both internal and external checks, we make sure that nothing is overlooked, and every customer receives hair extensions that reflect our commitment to excellence. Trusted by Salon Owners and Retailers WorldWide For salon owners and retailers, offering consistent, high-quality products is key to building trust with their clients. A single bad batch of hair extensions can hurt their reputation. That's why so many turn to Superior Hair—we’ve earned a reputation for reliability, even in bulk orders. Our attention to detail, commitment to ethical sourcing, and use of advanced machinery mean that our wholesale clients can depend on us to deliver superior products every time. Real Talk: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Natural

Real Talk: How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Natural

Investing in high-quality hair extensions is an excellent way to achieve longer, fuller hair instantly. However, the secret to pulling off a picture-perfect look is making sure your extensions blend seamlessly with your natural hair. At Superior Hair Extensions, we know that maintaining a natural appearance with extensions is a top priority. Whether you're an expert or a first-time user, these tips will help you keep your hair extensions looking as natural as possible. Choose the Right Extensions for Your Hair Type The first step to achieving a natural look with hair extensions is selecting the right type. Consider your hair's texture, color, and length to find extensions that match perfectly. At Superior Hair Extensions, we have a wide range of options to suit various hair types and styles, making it easier for you to find your perfect match. Color Match: The closer the color of your extensions is to your natural hair, the more seamless the blend will be. Texture Matters: If you have curly or wavy hair, choose extensions with a similar texture for a unified look. Length Compatibility: Choose extensions that complement your current hair length to avoid an obvious transition. Proper Hair Extensions Installation Is Key Even the highest quality hair extensions can look fake if they're not installed the right way. Whether you’re using clip-ins, tape-ins, or wefts, following the proper installation techniques is important. Clip-Ins: For a natural look, section your hair and attach the clip-ins close to the roots, ensuring they’re evenly distributed. Tape-Ins: Make sure the tape is properly secured, and the extensions lay flat against your scalp to avoid any visible lines. For a flawless and natural finish, they should be installed by a professional. Halo Wefts: If using a halo weft, ensure it sits securely on your head and is well-hidden by your natural hair, blending seamlessly for a natural look. Proper installation not only helps your extensions look natural but also prevents them from slipping or becoming visible throughout the day. Blending Your Hair Extensions Seamlessly One of the most important steps in keeping your hair extensions looking natural is blending them with your natural hair. This involves styling your hair and extensions together to create a smooth transition. Cut and Layer: After installation, consider having your extensions cut and layered by a professional. This will help them blend more naturally with your natural hair. Style Together: Always style your extensions and natural hair together. Use heat tools like curling irons or straighteners to ensure both your hair and the extensions have the same wave or curl pattern. Tease for Volume: Teasing the roots of your natural hair can help cover the wefts or clips, ensuring they remain undetectable. By focusing on blending, you can achieve a natural, voluminous look that compliments your overall appearance. Maintain Your Hair Extensions Like a Pro In order to keep your extensions looking natural and new over time, you have to carefully take care of them. Good maintenance practices not only extend the life of your hair extensions but also ensure they continue to blend seamlessly with your natural hair. Gentle Washing: Use shampoos that are sulfate-free, and conditioners designed especially for hair extensions. Wash your extensions regularly to keep them clean and soft, but avoid over-washing, as this can lead to dryness. Proper Brushing: Use a brush specifically designed for extensions or a wide-tooth comb to avoid tangling and breakage. Always begin brushing from the ends and work your way up to the roots. Avoid Heat Damage: While heat styling is often necessary to blend your extensions with your natural hair, try to use heat tools at a minimum. When you do use them, apply a heat protection spray to prevent damage. Taking these steps will help keep your extensions in perfect condition which in return, makes them look as natural as possible for as long as possible. Are you ready to transform your hair? The Truth About Hair Extension Myths: What You Need to Know

The Truth About Hair Extension Myths: What You Need to Know

Hair extensions have become a popular go-to solution for anyone looking to add length, volume, or a touch of glamour to their hairstyle. However, with their rising popularity comes a slew of myths and misconceptions that can make it difficult to choose the right options. At Superior Hair Extensions, we believe in providing our customers with the facts. In this article, we'll look into some of the most common hair extension myths to help you choose if hair extensions are right for you.  Myth 1: Hair Extensions Destroy Your Natural Hair One of the most persistent myths about hair extensions is that they inevitably damage or destroy your natural hair. In actuality, hair extensions are completely safe and can even preserve your natural hair if they are put and cared for properly. Proper Installation Is Crucial: Damage typically arises from incorrect or overly tight installation of extensions. Whether you're using tape-ins, clip-ins, or other types of extensions, it's important to follow the recommended guidelines when it comes to installation. Regular Maintenance: Keeping your extensions clean and well-maintained helps prevent unnecessary strain on your natural hair. Protective Styling: Extensions can actually protect your natural hair by reducing the need for daily styling and exposure to heat from hair irons for example. When you choose hair extensions that are high-quality and follow proper care instructions, you can enjoy the benefits without worrying about damaging your natural hair. Myth 2: Hair Extensions Look Fake and Unnatural Another common misconception is that hair extensions always look obvious and unnatural. While poorly made or improperly installed extensions might not blend well, high-quality extensions can look incredibly natural when matched and applied correctly. Color Matching: The secret to natural-looking extensions is choosing a color that closely matches your natural hair. Superior Hair Extensions offers a wide range of shades to help you find the perfect match.Blending and Styling: Blending your extensions with your natural hair through cutting and styling ensures a seamless transition that looks natural and polished.Texture Matters: Choosing extensions with a texture similar to your natural hair helps create a cohesive look that enhances your overall appearance. With the right extensions and a little styling know-how, you can create a look that's nearly identical to your natural hair. Myth 3: Hair Extensions Are Only for Length Many people believe that hair extensions are solely for adding length, but they’re actually much more than that. Hair extensions can be used to add volume, create intricate styles, or even introduce new colors without the commitment of coloring your natural hair.Volume Boost: If you’re struggling with thin or fine hair, hair extensions can add the volume you’ve always wanted.Special Occasion Styling: Extensions are perfect for creating updos and other detailed styles for special occasions.Temporary Color: Want to try a new color without the commitment? Extensions allow you to experiment with highlights, lowlights, or even bold colors without altering your natural hair.At Superior Hair Extensions, we offer a variety of options to help you achieve your desired look, whether it’s longer hair, fuller volume, or a temporary change in color. Why Your Hair Extensions Feel ‘Plasticky’ and How to Avoid It

Why Your Hair Extensions Feel ‘Plasticky’ and How to Avoid It

Hair extensions are an amazing way to add length, volume, and style to your natural hair, but nothing is more disappointing than realizing your new extensions feel 'plasticky' or synthetic. The good news is that with the right knowledge, you can avoid this issue and invest in hair extensions that feel as natural as they look. At Superior Hair Extensions, we believe in helping you make the best choice for your hair. In this guide, we’ll look into why some hair extensions feel plasticky and offer tips on choosing high-quality, natural-feeling extensions.  Understanding Why Hair Extensions Feel Plasticky The plasticky feel in hair extensions often comes from synthetic materials. Synthetic hair is typically made from various types of plastic fibers, such as acrylic, nylon, polyester or mixed animal hair. These materials are not only less expensive to produce but also less natural in appearance and texture compared to human hair. Here are a few reasons why your hair extensions might feel plasticky: Synthetic Materials: The most common reason for plasticky-feeling extensions is that they are made from synthetic fibers. While these fibers can be styled and colored to some extent, they lack the softness, natural movement, and shine of real human hair. Low-Quality Blends: Some hair extensions are a mix of human hair and synthetic fibers. While these might be marketed as ‘real hair extensions,’ the synthetic blend can still give them a plasticky feel, especially after washing or styling. Coating and Treatments: Even some human hair extensions can feel plasticky if they have been heavily coated with silicone or other treatments to make them appear smoother or shinier. Over time, these coatings can wear off, revealing a less desirable texture beneath. How to Choose Natural-Feeling Hair Extensions To avoid the disappointment of plasticky hair extensions, it’s important to know what to look for when shopping for extensions. Here are some tips to help you choose extensions that feel as natural as possible: Choose 100% Human Hair: Always opt for extensions that are labeled as 100% human hair. These extensions are made entirely from real human hair, offering a natural look and feel that synthetic materials can’t match. At Superior Hair Extensions, all our products are crafted from high-quality, ethically sourced human hair that naturally blend with your own hair. Check the Source: Quality starts at the source. Look for companies that are transparent about where they source their hair. Reliable sources often indicate better quality hair, which translates to a more natural feel. Avoid Synthetic Blends: Be cautious of extensions that are labeled as ‘human hair blends’ or ‘heat-resistant synthetic hair.’ These blends often contain synthetic fibers that can give the hair a plasticky texture, especially after prolonged use. Invest in Quality: High-quality hair extensions may cost more, but they are worth the investment. Not only do they feel more natural, but they also last longer and can be styled and treated just like your natural hair. Why a Top-Notch Hair Vendor is Essential Your success in the hair extension business starts with selecting a high-quality vendor.
